A Texas New Year w/ ZZ Top, The Toadies & More (Dec/2019)

Two Texas Traditions – One great month

The Toadies – December 30th – Billy Bob’s Texas – Fort Worth, TX

Beloved DFW outfit The Toadies annual day before New Year’s Eve shindig at Billy Bob’s now it’s 7th year (& 8th overall appearance) is not only something locals look forward each holiday season, it now officially has it’s own day in the band’s hometown of Fort Worth.

Long time friends of mine, that I still try to see a few times a year still kicking ass. They are so beloved in this town, it’s always a treat to hear the hometown crowd sing back every lyric. I think of their appearances at Billy Bob’s this was my 6th.

This show is always unique as it straddles a very fine line as they are not the normal demographic of Billy Bob’s clientele nor is their audience whom the majority of have probably only seen the inside of this tourist institution thanks to the Toadies.Though it’s not NYE, it definitely has that year end vibe & is always the last show of the year (at least these last 7 years) for the band so their’s this kinda mean “fuck it” vibe that’s endlessly enjoyable.

ZZ Top – December 31st – Choctaw Casino Grand Hall – Durant, OK

But now it IS New Year’s Eve –

Same three guys. Same three chords. That’ s how Billy Gibbons assessed the ZZ Top 50th Anniversary Tour touching down in Durant, OK just across the Texas border for a NYE blowout.

Gibbons was being modest about the trio’s chord simplicity. Truth is, the band treated a crowd of about 6k to a dazzling display of fret work, squeezing all sorts of heavy, blistering blues rock out of an assortment of cool-looking guitars.

His two and only bandmates this past half century, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, did their parts well, providing a propulsive, vibrant beat to a parade of classic-rock hits, starting with “Got Me Under Pressure,” ZZ Top’s popular Sam and Dave cover “I Thank You” and the traditional pairing of “Waitin’ for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago,” in all its slow-stomping, guitar-screaming glory.

It was best just to accept things as they are, as Gibbons’ voice took on a weathered beauty, like an old painted barn, as ZZ Top kept blasting through guitar-drenched hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Pearl Necklace” and a sensational “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide,” all bluesy, boastful and gritty.

This casino crowd was old enough to sing along with a cover of the old coal mining country ode 16 Tons as the band dusted off the old gem.In another MTV classic, “Legs,” they busted out the fuzzy white guitars. As on other numbers earlier, the duo did a few tandem boogie dance steps.

Gibbons’ vocal grizzle fit the down-and-dirty sound of encore opener “La Grange,” which sounded great, as did follow-up pick “Tush” with Hill customarily on lead vocals. Fans got a second encore with Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock.” What they didn’t get was a New Year’s Eve countdown or really any acknowledgement of the holiday & impending end of the year & decade. I wonder if when people bought their tickets they knew that?
I bet when asked “What are you doing for NYE?” – they enthusiastically replied “Ringing in the New Year with ZZ Top !” only for the band to completely done by 10pm (which may have been late enough for some of this crowd).  Hell, with the right transportation they could have been back in Houston by midnight. Happy New Year!

The Pixies: Three Intimate Nights in Los Angeles + Beck at Jimmy Kimmel & more (Dec/2019)

My visits to Los Angeles are always an adventure packed with tons of fun, this time was no different.
How about three nights of intimate Pixies shows?

The Pixies – December 1st – No Vacancy – Hollywood, CA

I’d been to this very unique spot in Hollywood last year while doing some filming for our King’s X documentary. While the place is hopelessly for Hollywood hipsters who think they are in on some major secret that makes them feel special by patronizing the joint, it doesn’t make it’s decor & ambience truly one of a kind. Kind of feels like a Haunted Hotel with bar service. So I was happy to return, especially as the Pixies were gonna make a brief appearance ahead of their 2 intimate nights at the legendary Troubadour. Leave it to the Pixies, to outdo that by playing a place even smaller the night before.

Also to be clear, this isn’t a music venue, it’s very much a hipster bar with a dance floor and theme that’s made to feel like an old Hollywood mansion. The band setup on the “porch” where you would enter the courtyard to do your best Ella Fitzgerald impression. A brief, no frills, but fun mini-set consisting of three songs from their new LP Beneath The Eyrie as well as one of their biggest songs at the end.

Setlist:

Catfish Kate
On Graveyard Hill
Bird of Prey
Monkey Gone to Heaven

The Pixies – December 2nd-3rd – The Troubadour – Hollywood, CA

The group is playing only six Close and Personal North American concerts with a rare stop at Troubadour for Opening Night.

Night 1

When I arrived the line wrapped around the block & I was eagerly excited to get inside. Not only was I about to see The Pixies in a tiny spot (again) but here at this Rock N Roll institution, a place I somehow, in all of my years of galivanting the world in the name of musical adventure, I’d never been here.
Once inside, I was truly taken aback by just how intimate it really is. We had just seen the Elton John biopic Rocketman & of course that story includes his infamous star turn here back in the year of my birth & I couldn’t imagine it was so tiny. Motley Crue played here during the earliest days of their career. Man what I would give to have been at one of those.
But hey, I can’t complain, now I’m here or two glorious nights with one of my fave bands of all time performing on their own terms, swept up in a torrent wave of creativity, improvisation and craftsmanship that was awe inspiring and mind blowing.

There was no small talk or banter from the stage, but the giddy audience didn’t seem upset or disappointed. Instead, fans were entranced and mesmerized by the raw and explosive combination of eclectic talents of the founding members Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, drummer David Lovering and the newest addition to the Pixies lineup, bassist Paz Lenchantin who joined the band permanently in 2016 after touring with them in 2014.

With an expansive and generous set list of over 40 songs over two hours featuring material from their entire career + three covers while diving deep into their seminal catalog of material. All the songs that they performed stood as a testament and reminder of their legacy and enduring popularity that’s impossible to overstate.

Night 2

The second night began with a false start that they good naturedly laughed off. The show wasn’t quite as long & the place seemed to be more crowded but who can complain as they still performed a whopping 38 songs.

Close to two hours in, Black Francis announced, “We’re not going to do an encore, but we will play a little longer,” which was music to our ears. And so they played a couple of final songs, including one of their most aggressive numbers, the aptly-titled “Rock Music,” and “Debaser,” the latter an indelible pop tune about the Luis Buñel and Salvador Dalí short film Un Chien Andalou

I missed the Pixies during their first incarnation (1987-1992) but have done my best to make up for it since. Now I can add a legendary 3 night stand to the mix. Awesome.

(earlier that day) Beck – Jimmy Kimmel Studios – Hollywood, CA

Ok so earlier that day I (briefly) attended something that I initially thought would be cool (or at least worth my time that maybe quite wasn’t).
I was staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel which is literally across the street from the lot on Hollywood Blvd where they film the Jimmy Kimmel show and it’s end of show concerts. I got an invitation that Beck was playing but it being January (the concerts are generally held outdoors in the studio’s parking lot).
I thought “Cool, gonna see a private mini Beck show & I can walk there” – I wanted to be clear that I was NOT interested in anything to do with being a “seat filler”. You know when you watch TV that’s filmed in front of live studio audience, if you’ve never done it, you might think “Man, I’d love to be a part of that if I’m ever in LA or NYC (or wherever filming of these sorts generally takes place). Unless your the type of person who doesn’t mind trading the majority of your dignity to be near celebrity & can somehow tolerate others where that concept is completely lost, don’t ever do it, it’s a miserable experience.

I didn’t have much to lose as I was literally across the street, so I walked over at the requested “invite” time only to find out after waiting outside for an hour, that yes indeed this was one of those god dammned seat filler things. And even worse, you weren’t even gonna get the whole program (which for me was a blessing as I would have fight my way outta there). I thought, “Ok I can do this brief thing, learn my lesson (again) & gtfo”).  Come to find out after being herded like cattle with the most insufferable group every who’s entire collective self-awareness quotient was ZERO, this motherfucker is playing exactly ONE SONG.

I guess because he’s Beck (yawn) that he didn’t want his “performance” to be anything typical so instead of doing the two song thing most light night acts do, he wanted to do this full on conceptual video thing for the lame new single from his even lamer new album. So all of this was to flaunt his bad ideas on a whim and the dopey saps around me where more than happy to oblige. Never again.

Women of Rock! Joan Jett, Lita Ford, The Return of Heart & More (Oct/2019)

Good times with some of the most important women in the history of Rock N Roll!

Love Alive Tour: Heart w/ Joan Jett – August 23rd – Dos Equis Pavillion – Dallas, TX

Sidelined for a few years by some in-fighting between the Wilson Sisters. All has been put to the side to bring their Love Alive Tour to a packed house on a hot Texas August night. I was floored by how many people were here at a near sell-out of over 19,000. Good to know that many people, young & old still come to rock shows.
First up was my girl & former Runaway Joan Jett:

Now I’m a MASSIVE fan of hers no matter what & somehow this was only my third time to ever see her perform but I must say they first two were largely forgettable & sadly I didn’t have much expectation other than I was just glad to see her as always. Instead she delivered in a way I had hoped/anticipated the first time. Hit after hit that had this Big Fight Feel to it that hammered from song one to the finale. Hearing Light of Day live was a bucket list moment for me as that’s always been my go-to song when I’m feeling low or in need of a boost. She’s that rare talent, that while most of the material were covers, tonight they were all her’s.

Setlist:

Victim of Circumstance
Cherry Bomb (The Runaways)
Do You Wanna Touch Me (Gary Glitter cover)
Bad Reputation
You Drive Me Wild (The Runaways)
Light of Day (Bruce Springsteen cover)
Fake Friends
Love Is Pain
Long Time
Fresh Start
Love Is All Around (Sonny Curtis cover)
I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll (The Arrows cover)
Crimson & Clover (Tommy James & the Shondells cover)
I Hate Myself for Loving You

Encore:

Real Wild Child (The Dee Jays cover)
Everyday People (Sly & the Family Stone cover)

Up next, Heart made good on their half of the bill with a hits-heavy set that played to all their many strengths by mixing folk, funk, rock and power ballads into an exceptional set that flowed remarkably well.  It was clear from note one that Ann Wilson’s voice has not suffered a bit after 40 years of wailing (this badass turns freaking 70 next year) and it would only get better as Magic Man & others kept the crowd on their feet.

In fact, the only other time I’ve seen Heart was with also with Joan Jett as well as Cheap Trick, in 2016, the year all three entered the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame & decide to do a tour together of the same name. Nancy who also looked youthful & fit & STILL super gorgeous, continued her time in the spotlight with an acoustic guitar-based version of her big 80s moment These Dreams, which was likewise accompanied by a huge sing-along.

Heart’s biggest 80s hits were given the stripped-down treatment. The synths and massive choruses were completely removed from What About Love, and brought Ann’s voice to forefront and showed what amazing songs they are, it was difficult not to think of these bare arrangements as a reflection of their well-documented disdain for that era of their career.

Like Jett above, another band that does a lot of covers that seem more like theirs than he originals but they also have classic rock staples that still sounded as huge as ever. The funky Straight On and closer Barracuda were spot-on as  the band returned for their encore with a perfect rendition of Stairway to Heaven harkening back to the acoustic group the LoveMongers, an acoustic group the Wilson Sisters put together while Heart was largely inactive in the 90’s. The nearly two-hour set reminded me how multi-dimensional Heart is by moving from strength to strength seamlessly. Great show!

Setlist:

Rockin’ Heaven Down
Magic Man
Love Alive
Your Move (Yes cover)
I Heard It Through the Grapevine / Straight On
The Boxer (Simon & Garfunkel cover)
These Dreams
Dog & Butterfly

Even It Up
What About Love (Toronto cover)
Mistral Wind
Crazy on You

Encore:

Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin cover)
Alone (I-Ten cover)
Barracuda

Lita Ford – October 5th – Glass Cactus – Grapevine, TX

Now, a few weeks removed, it’s fellow former Runaway Lita Ford’s turn at the plate. The difference with Lita however tends to be either management or pigeonholed because of her Metal associations & image. What that mean’s is, while Jett is playing to 10s of thousands & in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Lita is seen as a bit of a throwback and the places she performs reflect that. While this venue was nice & all, it reeked of amateur hour and off the grid.
Didn’t stop Ford from rawking the joint however:

Thankfully, she too will be returning to big arena’s next year along with another Hall of Famer, Alice Cooper as his opening act, but on her own, she still plays every shithole that a performer of stature that’s been at it as long as she has would most likely avoid if they didn’t love it so much. And at just turning 61 years of age, it’s clear that she not only loves it but lives for it. You can tell that it makes her feel youthful, alive & like a star and in terms of performance that’s also great for the fans.

I too am a bit older now, so if I’m gonna drive all the way out to a resort in Grapevine, I wanna get there 5 mins before she goes on & be gone 5 mins after she’s done. Called the venue who of course bullshitted me about what time she was going on. I get there at the time they told me only to find that even the opener hadn’t gone on yet. I was up for any opener, the least of which these motherfuckers. Don’t remember their name but easily one of the worst “groups” I’ve had the misfortune to have to tolerate. And they played for like TWO HOURS. Brutal. Thankfully they had this nice patio right on Grapevine Lake so I passed the time somewhat peacefully thinking of a way to disable the speakers that was piping that horrible shit out to this little oasis.

So by the time Lita came on, I was a bit grumpy, but then about 60 or so people started making their way towards the front of the stage. Now, while still performing might make Miss Ford feel youthful, you will never feel older in your life being at one her solo shows in a place like this. It made me feel much older than I actually am & it was because the crowd was just so embarassing. Those people in High School that never acquired any self awareness? Their huge Lita Ford fans. Ford herself doesn’t seem to have much in that department either, who speaks in tour monologue or Gig Talk, but she’s LITA FREAKING FORD. Like the other groups mentioned above, she too does a lot of covers in her set, over half were covers or collaborations. But while their are movies made about Joan Jett all by herself, one thing Ford has over her is that she’s definitely a songwriter. Sadly, we will probably never see that Runaways reunion. But until then, Lita is still rawking.

Setlist:

Gotta Let Go
Larger Than Life
Relentless
Hungry
The Bitch Is Back (Elton John cover)

George Clinton Says Farewell To The Mothership (Aug/2019)

George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic (Farewell Tour) – August 24th – The Bomb Factory – Dallas, TX

George Clinton did not seem at all like a man on the verge of retiring from the road as he gave up the funk with the latest edition of Parliament-Funkadelic on what is being advertised on Clinton’s final tour. The music & even the band will live on without him he assures & if this show is any indication, I can’t imagine it ever stopping.

Clitnon sat down on occasion. He’s 78 & shit, they didn’t even go on till well after midnight, hell I was ready to sit down. That is until the party started & when a P-Funk Party starts it doesn’t stop until you do.

The show itself has great meaning for us – This was my wife & I’s first date in this very building 2 & half years ago. So much has transpired in the short amount of time & we were ready to celebrate.
urrounded by longtime members of the P-Funk All-Stars and new blood, including a few of his grandkids, on a stage that was crowded at times with more than 15 singers and musicians including DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight a longtime fixture of the P-Funk universe tearing it up on the epic guitar lead that was Maggot Brain & more.

The funk legend playfully flirted with women in the audience, many of whom were brought on that already-crowded stage as P-Funk took the party atmosphere to the next level, following Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) & Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples & more

This tour feels like a victory lap for a man who truly revolutionized the culture. Funkadelic isn’t just a band name; it’s a blueprint for blurring the lines between genres and bringing the people together as one.

Setlist:

Dog Star (Fly On)

Funkadelic Set

Get Off Your Ass and Jam
Pole Power
Meow Meow
Get Low
Super Stupid
One Nation Under a Groove
(Not Just) Knee Deep

Parliament Set

Flash Light
Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop)
P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)
Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)
Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples
Mothership Connection (Star Child)
Up for the Down Stroke

Encore:

Atomic Dog
Ain’t No Party Like a P-Funk Party

The man was clearly having too much fun to say goodbye & if this is the end for Brother George, he deserves his rest & our eternal respect & gratitude.

March Madness w/ Beck + we check in with George Clinton & P-Funk & so much more (March/2018)

Though we skipped SXSW this year to take a break after an already insane year, we stayed plenty busy this month.
Catching up with some of faves from the 90s that are still going strong + innovators & the world of Hip-Hop, Funk, Metal & beyond.

Beck – March 23rd – Toyota Music Factory – Irving, TX

We were just talking about Beck the other day & checking out his new LP Colors a rejuvenating foray into full-blown pop, when it occurred to me that I’ve only seen Beck perform twice & the last time was 1997.
Now I’ve been all over the world & lived in NYC & LA during that generational span of time so it never occurred to me that now back in my hometown of Dallas that he doesn’t play here that often & this show was something of a rare appearance. A reality he acknowledged early in the show:

“It’s been a long time — much too long, We’re going to try and make up for lost time tonight.”

Beck Hansen is 47 now and doesn’t seem to have aged appreciably (notwithstanding the occasional unforgiving close-up in high-def) in the interim between dominating MTV with his year-end fave list & decade-defining Odelay LP, though his publicist still made me shoot the show from the soundboard.

Before the set started I worried if I was gonna be familiar with any of the material or if he still remembers that stuff. I was completely blown away the first five songs all came from when his left-field music saturated the airwaves. Kicking off with powerful live versions of Devils Haircut & Black Tambourine, then The New Pollution, Que Onda Guero & Mixed Bizness, a dazzling showcase for his particular strain of boundary-blind alt-rock.

Seven band members, all of whom breathed life into the singer-songwriter’s famously dense compositions, backed Beck. The man himself alternated between electric and acoustic guitar, often forgoing any instruments at all to roam the stage and whip the room into something resembling wildness.

“That was a party,” Beck observed after he and the band brought “Loser” to a crashing close.

Opening the show was Twin Shadow who has amassed a strong body of work over the course of his relatively brief career, enough so that an hour show can be presented without lulls or giveaway tracks.

I’m Ready” sounded as confident as the rallying cry of its title. Lewis & Co. clearly has a lot of support from Warner Brothers at the moment & we are all better for it.

The Toadies w/ Helmet – March 2nd – The Bomb Factory – Dallas, TX

As the 90’s nostalgia continues (see above) two of my faves, old friends The Toadies & the unstoppable Helmet takes to the stage and immediately get the party started with tracks from their early years before showcasing several tracks from their most recent 2016 album Dead To The World.

And they just kept pounding, I was really wanting the light guy to fuck off with this annoying spotlight into the crowd that wasn’t doing anything but turning people off, but with my eyes closed even I could feel how powerful Helmet was as they kicked into high gear.

Setlist:

Role Model
Ironhead
Life or Death
Red Scare
So Long
Exactly What You Wanted
Unsung
Drunk in the Afternoon
I ♥ My Guru
Blacktop
Wilma’s Rainbow
Renovation
Milquetoast
Like I Care

In all fairness you can’t really call either one of the bands nostalgic acts because they never really stopped & continue to make great albums. Sure their most critical & monetary success in the mainstream came during that time but still kicking ass & the case of the Toadies, they may be more popular now than they’ve ever been, certainly that’s the case in Texas where they have established themselves of something of a Classic Rock outfit that is your birthright as a Texas to witness at least once.

Though I’ve seen them probably a hundred times since, it also occurred to me that I hadn’t seen the Toadies in this building since the night 1995 became 1996 during the Bomb Factory’s original run in the mid 90s. They struck back hard last year with The Lower Side of Uptown that this rollicking set featured most of.

George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic – March 3rd – House of Blues – Dallas, TX

For the second straight year, George Clinton and his Parliament-Funkadelic hit the road for the funk legends’ Mardi Gras Madness Tour. The legendary songwriter, bandleader, and record producer, at 76 years young, put on a rapturous, stunning, extraterrestrial funk fest The audience of Clinton and his band Parliament Funkadelic was a delightful mix of the aged and the not-so-aged, all races and walks of life, but essentially the young at heart.

On a personal note, last Spring was my girlfriend (now fiancee’) first date & I took her to see Parliament/Funkadelic & being recently engaged, this was a special celebration for us. The show was amazing & they dug deep into the setlist, however a major critique would have to be that the actual sound (particularly the volume) perhaps not the fault of the band, though I’d be quick to defend the staff here as they have been long trusted professionals that I’ve known personally for years.

The sound was so loud at times it became distorted & while this may sound like an easy fix, at a P-Funk show, the music never stops so if theirs problems you are forced to endure them. Still couldn’t believe Blackbird did all of Maggot Brain & it made it all worth it.
Added for this tour was Brandi Scott a striking (& quite resourceful) dancer (barely) dressed in current EDM Festival attire shamelessly self-promoting as she would often walk onto the stage with a giant sign that had her Instagram account of nakid87 on it (when she wasn’t taking selfies on the wings of the stage).

Tricky-Kid Top 25 LPs of 2017

Here it is! –
As I disclaim every year, I’m not so arrogant that I believe that what we like/listen to is somehow the “Top LPS” of the year or as if I’ve heard every album that’s come out this year – This is simply the stuff that we listened to the most or got the majority of our attention this year.
So much good stuff – In a year seemingly doomed from the start & with so much loss & confusion in an infuriating political climate we looked to these artists for solace, joy & comfort more than ever.

The following genres still have their own lists again this year –

Hip-Hop

Dance

Not to exclude them or make them somehow lesser than, just the opposite I did it to isolate and bring attention to them because looking at 40 album covers tend to blend all together at some point.
I hope you enjoy this, alot of these Year End lists I see tend to be dripping with agenda to show you how knowledgeable that are (or aren’t) This is just a fun list intended for use of reflection and sharing.

Sounds of Goth present & future w/ Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Ministry & more (Oct 2017)

In this article we explore the Sounds that have shaped Goth Culture, present, past & future!

Depeche Mode – September 22nd – Starplex Pavillion – Dallas, TX

I did it – It finally happened: I saw Depeche Mode perform live- For some reason the specific pleasure has escaped after being a fan for over 25 years. Everytime we were in the same town at the same time, something would ALWAYS come up to prevent me from seeing them.
I’ve ever been at multiple festivals they were at & STILL managed to miss them. I did catch Dave Gahan do his solo thing a couple of times in NYC about 15 years ago, but I was finally ready for a spin with the whole deal.

Now Depeche Mode per this article might be a be a band that you would equate more with the 1980’s but they enjoyed their greatest commercial success with 1990’s Violator & it’s follow up 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion.
With the latter album it started an LP-every-four-years cycle that still exists to this day leading up to this year’s excellent Spirit that this show is currently part of the tour in support of.

Beginning with Going Backwards they aimed for maximum impact, deviating occasionally from the studio arrangements but almost always in favor of more rather than less. Louder. Bigger. Busier. Admittedly, seas of dedicated fans demand a certain amplification, but the approach was at times exhausting, especially when it risked steamrolling the subtleties and nuance of songs like World In My Eyes

Principal songwriter and sometime singer Martin Gore delivered an emotional version of Home that stood out for its spare simplicity, as did his vocal turns on A Question of Lust and Somebody.

Not least because they were surrounded by so much bombast, older tracks like “Stripped,” the gorgeous new “Cover Me” and a gratuitous but lovely cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” turbo-boosted already reliable anthems like “Never Let Me Down Again” and “Enjoy the Silence” felt somewhat unnecessary no matter how well Gahan sold them with his swagger. It was as if the group, having made its hard-earned way to the top of the heap, was still hustling to justify the huge crowds by abandoning some of the traits that once set it apart.

Setlist –

Going Backwards
So Much Love
Barrel of a Gun
A Pain That I’m Used To
Corrupt
In Your Room
World in My Eyes
Cover Me
A Question of Lust (acoustic)
Home
Poison Heart
Where’s the Revolution
Wrong
Everything Counts
Stripped
Enjoy the Silence
Never Let Me Down Again

Drab Majesty – September 11th – Three Links – Dallas, TX

A group that would definitely fall in the future category – I stumbled on to them as I was already in the neighborhood at a separate gig & swung by this venue that my friend owns to discover this intense & visually stimulating freakshow by this futuristic duo known as Drab Majesty.

Comprised of former Marriages’ drummer Andrew Clinco and tourmate Alex Nicolaou, alter egos Deb Demure and Mona D respectively, the two performed tracks primarily from The Demonstration as well as a few songs off their 2015 album, Careless. Slow and brooding, Drab dug into the mesmerizing track for “Hallow” before delving into “The Foyer”, a hauntingly dreamy soundscape that kickstarts Careless.

Harking back to 80’s synth nostalgia, “Too Soon to Tell”‘s slick icy vocals with darkwave undertones flowed seamlessly into Drab Majesty’s contemplative track for “Not Just a Name”, commemorating Deb’s ability to mold his craft from something familiar to work that’s deeply personal and genuine alongside flawless transitions from the upbeat to the somber within his 40 minute set.

Lords of Acid w/ Christian Death – Oct 16th – Trees – Dallas, TX

As your disapproving parents might say, Lords of Acid leave little to the imagination. Their lyrics are unapologetically raunchy and sex-positive and their industrial-flavored dance music pounds with the subtlety of a jackhammer.

Perhaps because of these attributes, Lords of Acid were a key entry-point into the dance music scene as it took shape in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The group’s first two albums, 1991’s Lust and 1994’s Voodoo-U, were particularly influential on the sound and style of early rave culture. In recent months, Lords of Acid have begun reissuing these out-of-print classics on vinyl and now, the Belgian group are on this tour of the States (their first in 6 years) in which they are performing Voodoo-U in its entirety.

Pic here

Dubbed the Sextreme Fest ‘17 tour, the group, ever a rotating menagerie of artists and musicians, the one constant over the years being founder Praga Khan. Lead singer DJ Mea Fischer is powerhouse delivering a tour de force performance of slaying in style & smashing (literally) anything that was in her path & when she ran out of those, she actively went LOOKING for more things to break.

Not out of anger but seemingly out of sheer enjoyment to unleash the strength she was feeling & the band behind her tackled the music with equal attitude.

Assisting Mea on the mic was new addition Devon Disaster, who had joined the band and tour just a month before the show, seemed like she had been here her whole life & brought a veterans’ confidence of equal seductress & submissive.

The Genitorturers – November 5th – Trees – Dallas, TX

The Genitorturers out of Orlando, Florida are an industrial metal band whom originated during the 1990 Florida hardcore music scene. The band, founded by lead singer Gen, was initially called The Festering Genitorturers, shortening their name thereafter.

In 1993, they inked a deal with IRS Records and released their début album, 120 Days of Genitorture. Since then, they have released: Sin City (1998 Cleopatra), Machine Love (2000 Cleopatra), Flesh Is The Law EP (2002 Cleopatra) and Blackheart Revolution (2009 Retribution Music). The band is currently out on their 25 Years of Depravity tour & Genitorturers wasted no time in diving in to the debaucherous live show they are known for, albeit a bit toned down from their earlier years. Nonetheless they were on top of their game even with a hobbled venue sound system due to circumstances beyond their control. No sign of aging rockers in this band as Gen took to the stage full of vigor, her sinister, sleek performance coupled with her powerful voice domineering the crowd.

Along with pornographic theatrics, they fuse elements of hardcore punk, metal, and industrial electronics into their music. Their provocative live shows have helped bridge the gap between the fetish scene and the music scene. They like to call their live shows the Fetish Music Realm, which utilize audience volunteers and are filled with sexually charged antics.

All systems were go; a hi-octane performance that never let up for a split second. They cranked through a couple dozen songs without any sign of slowing down, with the crowd well in to the show. At this rate they will be going for another 25 years, if not more!

Ministry – November 11th – Gas Monkey Live – Dallas, TX

Al Jourgensen, the maniac of my nightmares, front man for Ministry, the first band that I truly feared. Sure I was a little nervous first time we saw Slayer when I was 16 & sure my first taste of a mosh pit with Anthrax at 14 was a tad nerve racking but I’ll never forget my childhood friend Chris, who moved away as sophmore only for my family to relocate to his new town our Senior year. By then he had a whole new thing going & he introduced me to 1989’s The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste and it scared the bejesus out of me.

When we went to see them on the Psalm 69 tour they even had a chain length fence separating them from the crowd just to illustrate the potential depravity of the audience, having to protect yourself from your own crowd! It could have been a stunt but it worked & we were hooked. I know that time marches on & I’m glad that after a hiatus, Ministry is back but their was no semblance of that menacing machine that they once were here in this live setting.

Always forward thinking still, they did something very smart by partnering with Death Grips to introduce themselves to the current tastemakers which made for a very interesting night of music (see our separate review of Death Grips here) but by the time Ministry took stage the crowd had thinned considerably.

Inflatable chickens that resemble Donald Trump take the stage. Known as one of the pioneers of Industrial Metal, opens their set with “Let’s Go” and if you’re familiar with the bands albums, you know that vocal effects are common in their sound. I noticed immediately that Jourgensen had those effects turned down and seemingly cleaner vocals. He did have two separate microphones, presumably with different vocal effects. Even Jourgensen seemed surprised by apathetical the crowd was “I’ve never known Dallas to be this fucking tame!”

Sure it was a Saturday night but the post-millenials seemed indifferent & those that came for Ministry seemed old & it was more like date night for former goth kids turned parents. At best Ministry just seemed like a pretty good Metal band with a muscular take on dance music, at worst, they felt like a bad Prong cover band. Al I love you but your bringing me down. Thanks for the memories.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour w/ Joe Walsh (April/2017)

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour – April 22nd – American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX

A special feeling was in the air – As only night #2 on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour celebrating four decades of timeless hits that were about to be played to one of the most appreciative crowds I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve always felt the crowd can equally make a show, no matter how good the band is, I love it when the band is right there with it.

“Hope you paid the babysitter well, ‘cause it’s gonna be a long night!”
Petty smiled widely & the sold out roared in response. This came after the one-two punch of opener Rockin’ Around (With You) from their first LP to 90’s inescapable Mary Jane’s Last Dance to illustrate the multitude of hits across as many decades.

The cheers were certainly not lost on Petty as he seemed almost stunned by the reaction & voiced his appreciation at every opportunity with sincere, clearly moved gratitude.
He also did this really cool thing, where he had an old fashioned giant trunk, that he used as a prop.
Inside were all the immediately identifiable hats that Petty as worn over the years so are instaneously linked to the music of the period so this trunk served as time machine taking you back over the past 40 years as he would reach into the trunk & remove a hat & you instantly knew what was coming.

A fantastic rawking affair that just had unforgettable written all over it. The band & crowd enjoyed a momentum that lasted all the way throughout the encore implying the insatiable crowd would have been fine if they played all night.

Joe Walsh and company opened the festivities highlighted by a moving cover of The Eagles’ Take It To The Limit dedicated to Walsh’s bandmate, the late Glenn Frey. Walsh is such a badass & could have easily filled this building on his own so having the both him & Petty as a one-two punch made the night just that much more special.

I personally have been on a bit of Walsh tear as of late. While I’m admittedly not the being Eagles consumer, I’ve always loved Joe & his swagger mixed with friendly face & fiery guitar just frames something I really can’t seem to get enough of. I was invited to his pre-tour Vegas residency back in January that mark some of the best shows I’ve ever seen by anyone. So much so that a little over a week while the Petty tour was having a day off, Walsh was doing his own headliner gig and I just couldn’t resist.

Joe Walsh – January 18th – Mandalay Bay – House of Blues – Las Vegas

This was night #4 of a six night residency over a ten day period & the first show in 4 days.
Joe Walsh is one of the great gunslingers of any time & proceeded to treat us all to some straight up lawlessness that made the next two hours seem like hanging out with an old friend.
From the opening James Gang number Walk Away longtime fans got the nod with Help Me Through the Night, & that was just the beginning of a night of music that inspired that anything was possible.

He talked about everything from these six House of Blues shows through Jan. 21 to the year just ended (“I didn’t like that so much”) to the one just starting (“The first 100 days are gonna be a hoot”). The title track to his 2012 album Analog Man gave Walsh to put the current insufferable concert ettiquette of playing to a wall of cell phones on blast: “You can have your iPhone pointed at me, and put it on the internet. Or, you can just look up.”

Solo albums and the James Gang mean Walsh relies less on his work with the Eagles but he performed Take It to the Limit & dedicated to the late Glenn Frey appropriately as today was the one year anniversary of his sudden death last year.
Heater served up Life in the Fast Lane which he co-wrote with Frey and Don Henley, after mock protest that it’s “a real pain in the ass to play.”

As he hit the homestretch with his signature Life’s Been Good, the giant rear screen showed us snapshots of the singer-guitarist with rock’s upper tier of royalty: Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Keith Richards and Ron Wood, Pete Townshend, Bruce Springsteen … the list goes on.
And then he played Rocky Mountain Way to send us home. A longtime friend indeed.

Scott Ian (DJ set) – January 21st – Circle Bar at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas

One of the fun things about Vegas is the random people, performers, celebrities you run into that are either here on business or just to have fun like you. After being at this hotel all week covering the shows your reading about as well as the AVN Expo & performing as a DJ myself it was fun to see Scott Ian of Anthrax play some tunes for a special DJ set as part of the Circle Bar celebrity DJ series. The AVN Awards held at the Joint inside the casino had just let out so when you exit to enter the casino this is the first thing you see so this was also a bit of an unofficial after-party.
Every major working porn star & rock royalty spinning tunes, what more could you ask for? Only in Vegas.

Joe Walsh – April 30th – Winstar World Casino – Thackerville, Oklahoma

Joe Walsh is a legend and, once again, proved why he has earned that distinction. His performance was flawless and highly entertaining, just as it has been for decades. His witty sense of humor and appreciation for his faithful fans always adds to the great experience of sharing a couple of hours with him.

Walsh had all of the babyboomers out of their seats and rockin for 90 minutes straight. A true entertainer with his small talk between songs and jokes about growing older and the intrusion/confusion of the internet era. Great energy from the stage and the audience. Everything from the Eagles, James Gang and just enough of a smattering of his new stuff. Didn’t want it to end.
