Wrestlemania 30 Week Part III: Axxess, Wrestlecon,Shimmer & more (2014)

o after the crazy events of yesterday we slept in a bit, but then headed right back across the water and actually ended up right back to Tulane University where we just left less than 8 hrs prior.

Day 3 – April 5th (Daytime)

We hadn’t had alot of sleep and it was also very rainy today that made us want to stay in even more but we had alot to do and were very excited about.
Today we will go over the culture at dueling fan conventions that were right across the street from each other Pat & Gino’s style as well as sampling a little bit of what New Orleans’ culture had to offer as well. The theme of today is the women of wrestling. –

WWE Fan Axxess & Superstore –  Ernest N. Morial Convention Center – New Orleans

We actually paid a quick visit to the Convention Center the first day we got here but didn’t go into Axxess yet, we just scoped out the Superstore at the entrance.
Everything about WWE Axxess is huge from the ceiling-to-floor banners that line the walls of the entrance way, to the Hall of Fame exhibits, to the life-sized replicas of different props and sets over the years. It took us three visits over two days to see it all.

In addition to the exhibits there are 10 autograph stations,  where fans can line up to meet members of the entire roster, and many of the company’s legends.
I talked a bit in the last blog entry about fandom vs. cynicism in my view of Fan Expos – I’m not a cynic or a critic but just honest and want to give a clear distinction of what the culture was like.
Personally for me, I’m not a picture/autograph guy – nothing against those that are but I have to admit that I just don’t get it.
Sure I would love to geek out on comics with A.J. Lee, or hang out with Kane or talk music with Renee Young but only as contemporaries & that’s not what happens at these things.
What takes place is that you stand in line for an unhealthy amount of time and then your experience is processed assembly-line style and you have about 90 secs to gush whatever prepared platitude you are convinced will have an impact that is essentially identical to what the 30 people ahead of you said – & the object of said gushing is completely desensitized to it as they’ve heard the same thing for hours today, yesterday & everyday after that.
The most puzzling/humiliating thing is when I see people do what I call “the lean” – That is when they take that embarassing photo where they lean across a table (where there’s still a good 3 ft between you and the person) and tell all of there friends “Hey look! I met Triple H!” – You didn’t meet Triple H, you paid money to stand in line to lean against a table that he happened to be on the other side of in a completely forgettable exchange. Unless your under 18, Why is this enough for people?

Maybe I’m just a prideful asshole that doesn’t know how to relax & have fun but after years of being on the road with musicians I know that fans are not looked at by those they are fans of as equals or even worthy. Sure, they depend on your money & support so their happy to smile and take pics for a few hours but trust me behind closed doors they are laughing at you. If you are willing to stand in line to lean against a table you are a mark and their isn’t anyone they respect less than a mark.

If all that weren’t enough to seperate you from your money, there are plenty of opportunities to show even more support for the company,  as the connected Superstore includes several hundred different types of merchandise, from T-shirts, toys, and trinkets, to expensive collectibles like replica championship belts and statuettes.
Let me tell you something, witnessing a sea of grown men taking over a city walking around like their the champion is the most expensive & darkest side of cosplay I’ve seen yet.

Who has this much expendable income? – Answer = People from the U.K.
The WWE is more popular in the UK that its ever been and its fans greatly (and mostly positively) impact the experience during the Wrestlemania week as I mentioned at Jim Ross’s show on Thurs and will comment further about the now tradition of the post-Wrestlemania RAW being the wildest show of the year due to their attendance.
While being entertained by all of the over-priced merchandise and the fools that were scooping it up – we did enjoy the incentive in place to get people to shop with an appearance by two of our faves Fandango & Summer Rae

If you’ve only seen Summer on TV, she’s even more impressive in person.
I was thinking of buying a program but when I opened it, again all it was, was a layout for you to get autographs. No thanks.
We then head into Axxess proper and though I have no interest in autographs/humilating myself there were lots of things here to enjoy.

Exhibits –

Meanwhile, the NXT ring is being used to put on matches with full entrance ramp and TitanTron,  from some of the company’s top future prospects, or for even more interactivity in the form of in-ring Q&A sessions.

Paige vs Shanna

I got to see Paige wrestle at Axxess last year (against Summer Rae ironically) and its what introduced me to both of them. Paige is a HUGE talent and should be called up soon & not to mention she is so ridiculously attractive & captivating. As a member of the press I had the privledge to by pass all the bullshit and chat with a few of the wrestlers. And nothing against the current product, but I’m really only interested in the Divas division currently.

Alicia Fox & Aksana

Layla interviewed by Infamous

A.J Lee having some fun with Tamina Snuka

Promoting the new animated Scooby-Doo cartoon she’s in on the second day

….and being the geek she is, giving a very funny & candid interview with Marvel

In my opinion I think she’s the best Diva/Female Wrestler they have ever had. She would thrive in any era – Understands what it takes to be a heel, has a real passion for the business and is totally irresistable.

On the way out I got to meet the past & future of the art of the backstage interview – Mean Gene Okerlund & Renee Young –

Okerlund of course needs no introduction and is probably the most likeable & instantly recognizable persona from the 1980’s (especially the work he did with Hulk Hogan). Everyone that has followed him has had their work cut out of them because they all make you miss him, that is until now – Renee Young, who is relativly a new-comer is the first one in my opinion since Okerlund that is a total Grand Slam.
Yes, she’s good-looking & wonderful to look at but more importantly she has the most pleasant personality and edgy spirit of anyone (including Okerlund) they’ve ever had. She makes you want to listen and is just fearlessly cool.

Like I said the theme of today is the women & between Summer, AJ, Paige & Renee they are dominating (the cast of Total Divas excluded).

Wrestlecon – The Sugar Mill – New Orleans

Right across the street from Axxess was Wrestlecon a dueling Fan Expo. Compared to the big money & glitz of the WWE this was very low-rent in the same vein as yesterday’s Mid-South event.  Though most of my faves were across the street the vibe here was very indie to the WWE’s uber-mainstream feel.
Again cynical for idealism – on one hand Axxess was the Mall of America compared to the outlet Mall in bumfuck Wyoming feel of Wrestlecon, but that’s kind of the charm of it.
Thank gawd for our press passes because the organization of this was so blundered, giving its ability to compete less steam by the second.
There was a line stretched around the corner and I heard that some waited for close to two hours to get in. In their defense they did issue an apology letter with a full explanation on their website about the weather being a factor. Cue – Blame it on the Rain
Cynically this is the scene in the Wrestler where he makes an appearance at that old armory where old dogs go to die and any wrestler here knows that.
Ideally, however I am older so there were far more wrestlers that I watched growing up here than over at WWE.

As I mentioned above about the embarassing photo op situation, when it comes to one at this level theirs an added uncomfortable exchange, each wrestler actually charges you for their autograph. Could you imagine charging someone for you to sign something? If you wanted a clear-cut example of how you are seen as inferior – look no further. The sad thing is that guys that are at this level are hungrier for the attention & also more in need of the cash so it creates this odd culture that people feel like they want to support them so the wrestlers have to give them the girlfriend experience and these dudes think their actually friends with these wrestlers. Then since each wrestler sets their own price of what they charge, then it creates an even more uncomfortable hiearchy of who can charge the most among a sea of people trying to cling to some kind of dignity.
It wasn’t all bad – there were some top guys there that didn’t have to be there (or were paid handsomely to be) as well as some other great attractions & an amazing wrestling card that I’ll speak of in the next installment following the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.

The Hart Foundation
Bret Hart & Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart

Kurt Angle & Al Snow

Matt Hardy & Reby Sky

As well as some of my fave Divas from recent years as well.
Before AJ & Summer, Maryse & Maria were two of my all-time faves.

Ran into a few others that we saw at Mid-South Fanfest yesterday like Angelina Love – this time with her Beautiful People tag team partner Velvet Sky

..and Celeste Bonin (Kaitlyn) this time with cross-fit model Brittany Fried

Mickie James who was also at the Mid-South Fanfest yesterday but unable to wrestle due to her pregnancy, unbeknownst to me is pursuing a career in music and has released two LPs already. She gave a brief, but fun performance –

She sings really well & despite her sitting during the show, most of the songs were uptempo that showcased her strong voice, especially one in particular Goin’ Fast that was co-written with The Civil Wars’ John Paul White.

I’m just now learning who Colt Cabana is and all of his ambitions. For those of you rolling your eyes reading this right now, please know that after Mid-South folded in 1987 I only watched WWE and I even stopped watching that for almost 10 years. Since 2001 I’ve only paid attention to WWE and have literally no knowledge of any independent promotions (even ECW) & their talent (and yes as I’m learning that is greatly my loss for which I’m trying to learn and catch up on).
Cabana is a wrestler but also a comedian and entrapeneur who does a weekly podcast with his friends called the Art of Wrestlng & one of the attractions was they recorded live here at the fest.

As fucking nerdy as it gets, but Cabana was very funny & likable. He kinda reminds me of Kevin Smith in a way and his podcast would appeal largely to the same fan base.
These wrestling podcasts are becoming addictive – Their so easy to produce & a great revenue stream so alot of wrestlers do them. Then the shows book themselves as they all just appear on each other’s shows. But when done right, it feels like your getting to sit down with someone you’ve always wanted to talk to and hear real stories that will captivate you. I find myself listening more to podcasts than music when I drive, which is rare because I’m such a music guy.

Goldberg also participated in a Q&A – Now again I never watched WCW so quite frankly his career never meant shit to me but this is the kind of stuff I can get into. Leave with something real and useful other than an autograph.

Topics covered:

– On the Hall of Fame: Said he doesn’t think it will ever happen, but I think he was mostly just being humble.

– On coming back to WWE: Said it may happen someday, but that there was never any real offer to return.

– On Chris Jericho:  Said people are gullible if they believe Jericho actually took him down in the WWE locker room. Said he had to be careful when he came in to WWE because he was newly signed. But he also said the situation in WCW with Jericho was his (Goldberg’s) fault. He bought into his hype and the backstage politics.

– On William Regal: He said about 3/4ths through the match he knew Regal was legit shooting on him and trying to make him look bad.

– On Wrestlemania 20: Said he wishes it had turned out better, but the news of both his and Brock’s departure really hindered the match.

Freret Fest/Crawfest + Shimmer Women Athletes – Tulane University – New Orleans

After leaving the fan fests we were hungry and had several hours to kill before heading to the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.
We have been attending wrestling events non-stop for since we got here three days ago and were going to another one tonight and the next three nights as well. So in order to take a break and enjoy the local culture we headed back to Tulane University (where we just left at 3am the previous night after attending the insanity that was the Kaiju Big Battel).
In spite of the rain, there was alot going on today with two more dueling festivals, beginning with the Freret St Festival which is the Kick-off to the Festival Season, usually held the first Saturday in April.
In Part I of this series I talked a bit about my historically bad luck in New Orleans which is odd because the exports this city is known for should be right up my alley:
Music, Madness & Crawfish.
So today on the campus to kick off the season they were having Crawfest, one of the biggest events of the year.

I’ll talk a bit more about Freret & Crawfest in a later non-Wrestling themed entry but for now let me tell you what happened after we ate and walked around a bit.

We got to see the campus during the day when it was a little less menacing (& gorgeous) and walked by McAlsiter Auditorium where the Kaiju thing was last night – only to discover that another wrestling show was about to start……and it was an all-female promotion!! I told you that the theme of today was the ladies.
Poor Jess was probably already wrestled-out and still had a long way to go but she’s always up for something new & loved the idea so inside we went.
Here is what we discovered:

SHIMMER, a Chicago-based indy promotion that features women wrestlers exclusively. And it was tremedous!
It was great on its own terms, as an afternoon of top-notch pro wrestling by women, & thankfully unlike Kaiju, it doesn’t exist in a vacuum.
Despite having a rich history as part of pro wrestling, women’s wrestling these days mostly gets treated as a sexy sideshow. This is in large part because the decision-makers at WWE haven’t given a shit about their female athletes for a long time, and for better or worse, WWE defines for the whole world what pro wrestling is. Though there are standouts— notably as I mentioned, AJ Lee as well as Summer & Paige but largely WWE’s female roster is crowded with swimsuit models instead of wrestlers.

This is not to say the women of Shimmer aren’t attractive, just that the focus is on kick-ass wrestling, and the wrestlers on its roster were amazing. They’re dynamite in the ring and their heels in particular talk smack to the crowd with a naturalness that’s all too rare in independent wrestling, which tends to privilege technical ability over charisma and mic skills.

Though the in-ring action was five-star, the presentation was no-frills; a little more pageantry wouldn’t have hurt.
Here are the matches we saw and quickly got a lesson and tried to learn as much as we could –

Neveah & Sassy Stephie defeated Heidi Lovelace and Solo Darling

This was a great opening match, with some great tag work from both teams.

Solo and Lovelace are great together as a team, while Stephie and Nevaeh were excellent heels.

Leva Bates defeated Veda Scott

Leva Bates, dressed up for this New Orleans show as the Louisiana-based X-Men superhero and weekly-paper Gambit.

A short but solid match with decent back-and-forth offense. Leva got the win with over Veda Scott a top-rope Pedigree. Veda was really entertaining & she’s working that nerd angle but like AJ I’m sure its genuine & she’s got that whole indie-rock vegan thing going and was one of my favorites of the whole show.

Kay Lee Ray defeated Vanessa Kraven

As the six-foot Vanessa Kraven threw around her spirited but diminutive opponent, Kay Lee Ray, a Ray fan in the audience shouted, “You’re a bully!” Kraven, who had just hoisted Ray’s limp body up to shoulder height, smiled. “Damn straight,” she said, and dropped Ray spine-first across an upraised knee.

The best match of the night by far, Kay Lee really impressed me in my first exposure to her, & so did Kraven with some great powerhouse moves. Kay Lee picked up the win countering Kraven’s powerbomb attempt with a sunset flip for the three count. She is also crazy attractive and my favorite of all the girls on the card.

Ivelisse defeated Kimber Lee

A great performance from both women. Ivelisse Velez was the only wrestler I recognized (remember we didn’t even know of the existence of this promotion a few hours ago), you might remember her as a contestant from the 2011 season of Tough Enough & she was on NXT briefly.

In the end, Ivelisse landed her finisher,  a Code Red on Kimber Lee for the victory.

Athena defeated Candice LeRae

This was a great match between Athena & Candice LeRae – both tremendously talented & put on a superb match. Athena is from Dallas so we were rooting for her.

And speaking of AJ Lee, clearly her influence is felt everywhere (as it should be) as you can see Candice performing AJ’s finisher the Black Widow above.
Athena won with a  top-rope stunner she calls the O-Face and totally kicks ass.

Mercedes Martinez defeated Courtney Rush  for the NCW Femmes Fatales International Championship

Mercedes Martinez comes out and issues an open challenge for the NCW: Femmes Fatales International Championship. Courtney Rush comes out to answer the challenge, and we have a match.

Mercedes Martinez is this crazy, awesome looking mad women, covered in these gnarly tattoos who seemed like a legitimate tough chick. I mean their all tough but like truly scary but also very sexy. Lots of back & forth until Mercedes rolled her up for the win to claim the belt. I was totally into this match.

Hikaru Shida defeated Evie

Another fantastic match. The pair threw literally everything at each other, and earned the second “this is awesome” chant of the night.

Hikaru Shida got the win over Evie with a running knee. Both competitors were top notch. Evie has a great look and can really work, she would be perfect on WWE if they had better sense and scouting.
The matches on this card were as good as any pro wrestling we saw all weekend.

Global Green Gangsters (Kellie Skater & Tomoka Nakagawa) defeated Madison Eagles & Nicole Matthews  for the Shimmer Tag Team Championship

This is getting ridiculous now, I’m running out of adjectives to do these matches justice haha
The tag-team of Kellie Skater & Tomoka Nakagawa known as the Global Green Gangsters put on one hell of a show.

It was brilliant. Slater got the win after hitting her finisher called The Hangover on Nicole Matthews following miscommunication between her & Madison Eagles.

Cheerleader Melissa defeated LuFisto – Two out of Three Falls match for the Shimmer Championship

It took twenty minutes for the first fall to take place, with LuFisto (a name that we laughed about and made reference to the rest of the weekend) hitting her finisher, the Mangalizer for the three-count.

As the action spilled out right in front of us, Cheerleader Melissa replied in kind just moments later with an Air Raid Crash to level the score. The match continued until well past the half-hour mark, before Mercedes Martinez came to the ring while the referee was down, smashed her NCW:FF belt over LuFisto’s head and allowed Melissa to get the pinfall and keep the title. An awesome, awesome match, what a show.

Mercedes & Melissa celebrating with their title wins in the ring to end the show.

There are a lot of things WWE does better than anyone else could ever hope to, and there are things WWE does terribly. By taking female pro wrestlers seriously, promoting them as stars and worthy pro-wrestling attractions rather than decorative nonsense, SHIMMER gives audiences something different from what they’re used to, and it’s refreshing. That’s really been AJ’s triumph is that she has forced the powers that be to take her & the female division seriously and that’s why their getting the attention they deserve finally. Any one of these ladies would be a welcome addition to WWE programming in my opinion.

Stay tuned for Part IV where we go to the WWE Hall of Fame & Ring of Honor After-Party!

Wrestlemania 30 Week Part 2: Mid-South Fanfest + Kaiju Big Battel & more

This was the part of the trip I think I’ve been most looking forward to writing about because it details a very personal history of mine.
In 1982 for my 8th bday my dad took me to see my very first wrestling match and needless to say that’s all it took, I was hooked.
We were living in Little Rock, AR & he took me not because he was the fan and I along for the ride – very much the opposite – in fact he took every chance he could to criticize & heckle the television when starting that year my Saturday Mornings full of cartoons culminated with an hour of wrestling (although he would never admit it I know he started to enjoy it & soon look forward to it as well).
Fans from the 1980s will remember that pre-1985 wrestling back then was a territorial business & so you only had access (unless you had cable) to what the local territory was and even if you had cable that program was not going to tour outside its defined territory.
About once every other month at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, from 1982 – 1986 one of my parents would take me to see our local promotion: Mid-South Wrestling.
It was $5 for adults & $3 for children and I remember my dad always paying with a $10 and the remaining $2 was for me to hit the concession stand with.
I knew the show was good, but it wasn’t until I was an adult & even still now that I’m aware of just how lucky I was to have lived in that territory.
Sure you always go back to your childhood & you never feel the same way about things the way you do about things that happened when your a kid – It’s natural to put that revisionist spin on it because you put that special meaning on it regardless if its deserving or not.
However, historically Mid-South Wrestling is now viewed as the greatest wrestling territory ever and its episodic storylines are now legendary above all others.
All of the wrestlers that started there that went on to bigger things speaks for itself and all of the ones I have personally spoken to marvel at the fact that whenever fans stop them on the street they ask them about Mid-South more than any other time in their careers.
When I ran into Jim Cornette last night and told him I was an old Mid-South guy he asked me if I was coming to the 1st ever Mid-South Fanfest the next day.
I told him I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Day 2 – April 4th

So with that sense of nostalgia we got up early and headed back across Lake Pontchartrain for an unforgettable day & also Jess’s first live wrestling event.

1st Annual Mid-South Wrestling Fan Fest – Sigur Center – Chalmette, LA

There are two ways you can view this event: Both valid and accurate but with completely different experiences. It would be impossible for me not to adopt a little bit of both. One side being the optimist reliving some of his favorite memories as a child – The other, a rational adult who is forced to see the event for what it is.I will explore both viewpoints here – however regardless, nothing changes that we had a great time and am so glad we came.

Realistically it was a relatively muted affair held about 10 miles out of New Orleans in the sleepy suburb of Chalmette. Attended by a couple of hundred die-hards in a a small room in the local events center to meet a handful of stars from the promotion from the 1970s and 1980s.
The major exhibits beyond photo ops & autograph sessions, were two Q&A sessions, both moderated by Jim Cornette and a cajun style dinner with legendary Mid-South promoter Cowboy Bill Watts.

The first event held first thing in the morning, right when we got there was the Q&A w/ the Midnight Express, the Rock and Roll Express & Superstar Bill Dundee.

Each were introduced fighter intro style by Socal Val who would also host the wrestling portion of the event later in the evening.
This was a real treat for me and totally full circle as one of my fave memories as a child almost 30 years prior was being at the live events during the height of the R&R/Midnight Express feud. Seeing them all seated at a table together telling stories and answering questions was worth the price of admission right there & Jim Cornette was as funny & outspoken as his wrestling persona.

Afterwards we checked out the spread of the Fanfest – The merchandise was limited to a few T-shirts, some 8X10s, a few vendor tables with DVDs, books, and action figures, and any items that the stars were selling.  It was a mix of personalities from the territory like Kamala (who sadly had double-leg amputation in 2011 due to diabetes) & Dark Journey along with more modern stars like ECW Originals Tommy Dreamer and Shane Douglas (both who wrestled at the events later)
Mickie James (who appeared but cancelled her match due to now being pregnant) and former WWE Diva Kaitlyn (who now goes by her real name Celeste Bonin….and who should’ve been Mickie’s replacement in the match in my opinion).

Hacksaw Jim Duggan

In 1985, my Dad took me to an outlet mall in Bryant, AR (between Little Rock & Benton) one Saturday afternoon to meet Hacksaw Jim Duggan, my fave at the time & the hero of the territory. I couldn’t see how you could have a Mid-South anything without him being there, so I was glad to see him.
Compared to the other events we attended this week, the interaction with the wrestlers was not crowded or rushed and fun for all.

During the cajun style dinner Jim Cornette returned to conduct a Q&A with Cowboy Bill Watts. Watts is to Mid-South as what Vince McMahon is to the WWE, he was the booker, the promoter and essentially the lifeblood of the organization. When WWE inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2009 (along with Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Von Erichs) it was one of my main inspirations for attending.
Of course I’m older now and this stuff means more to me than anything that will come later regardless of the quality of what’s current. However I don’t count myself among some of the attendees here, who bemoan the current WWE product and seem blissfully unaware that culturally they have checked out.
To me this was a celebration of something special – a time – a place – for me – that was unlike any other.

(later that evening) Mid-South Battles Lines – Sigur Center – Chalmette, LA

As one might expect from a company steeped in wrestling tradition, the night also featured a complete wrestling show, featuring a mix of some of those stars with other current names, like Elijah Burke, Lance Hoyt, and TNA Knockout Angelina Love.

Arriving at this old building in a small town (just outside New Orleans) for better or worse felt just like the Mid-South events I remember as a kid. Their was a lady behind a folding table with a stack of pre-printed tickets selling them for cash only – Just like the old days. Was this on purpose or they just haven’t updated their resources since the 80s? – I’ll let you decide, but it was perfect. Especially the old school concession stand – the smell of the nachos almost made me cry (with delight).

We get upstairs to our seats and prepare for the show to begin –
To unpack things a bit this was NOT an event put on by the former producers of Mid-South – this was an event put on by independent promotion
Traditional Championship Wrestling who clearly has a Mid-South fan among their ranks of Matt Riviera and given the rich tradition of Mid-South in New Orleans decided to host a Mid-South themed event and this along with the fanfest were the results.

This is important to note because in order to proceed one must ask/answer the following:

Why after 28 years of folding as a promotion would they have a Mid-South event now? – A: Again because of the geographic significance along with the strength of renewed interest from WWE’s recent DVD Legends of Mid-South?

Why wouldn’t they have done one before, why is this the first one? – A: This is the most important question of them all and the answer is because for an extremely prideful territory like this who even in the Information Age still largely sticks to kayfabe, that pulling back the curtain like this is really something that would have taken this long to get to (if ever). Also because most of the wrestlers or those involved back in the day have since died and their are very few left – so do it now before its too late.
Also again this was not put on by Mid-South, this was put on by fans of Mid-South that also might explain the absence of some crucial names that are still alive (and were in town) – Why Jim Ross, Ted Dibiase, Terry Taylor & Michael Hayes were not there is either they couldn’t afford them or those under WWE contract were not allowed to. Regardless they should have been.

….but I wasn’t here to entertain the politics of the business, I was here to relive a time before I knew that their even were politics in the biz.
We headed upstairs to our first balcony seats to get ready for the show to start, that was actually being streamed online via Pay Per View.

With less than 200 in attendance in a place that holds 3,000 and the show being staged Town Hall style it was what it was but it started a great theme of being at an event with no one to the left, right, in front or behind us. I told Jess she was my good-luck charm after the nightmare situation that I experienced at the events in NYC last year.
Here are the highlights:

With all the competition during WrestleMania weekend, TCW knew it needed some name wrestlers to draw a crowd. It was an odd mix of wrestlers from TCW (who I didn’t even know existed before today) along with a hodgepodge of former WWE and TNA wrestlers or any seemingly journeyman with a reputation.

With Socal Val handling the announcing the show began with former WWE star Chris Adonis (who used to go by the Masterpiece) vs. Lance Hoyt.

Tommy Dreamer is apparently just a wrestler for hire these days was involved in a six-man tag vs. The Empire who’s Mid-South contribution was being escorted to the ring by Dark Journey – the former valet of The Missing Link.

Another Mid-South contribution was a match with 70 year old Bill Dundee who appeared on the panel this morning vs. King Shane Williams

The smell of those nachos made it impossible to resist making a trip to an old school concession stand just the like old days. And apparently with 1985 prices too as I couldn’t believe that an order of nachos piled high with everything on them and a beer was $3.50 !!!
I come back with my prize of processed cheese & microwaved chili, reveling in the white trash diet of my youth excited to tell Jess how cheap they were as
Elijah “The Pope” Burke threatened to steal the show in his amazing match with Steve Anthony.

They had Jess so riled up and excited that caused her to knock the entire gelatinous mess ALL OVER ME – She is normally very clumsy anyway but I couldn’t be mad – I was proud of her excitement and even prouder to say that my first event was a Mid-South show and now she could say the same.
I went back to the concession stand and the incredibly cute college girl that sold them to me with the thickest cajun accent I’ve ever heard heard saw I was covered in cheese took pity on me, gave me stuff to clean up with and replaced my order free of charge. No chance of that ever happening in NYC.
They only cost $2 to begin with so I tipped her $5 and thanked her profusely.

Naturally following this match their was an intermission (so if I had just waited, my pants might have been chili-free)
I hadn’t been to a wrestling event that had an intermission since the 80’s – it was perfect –

Their were a few other announcements:

Matt Riviera presented a check for $1000 to Bobby Fulton of The Fantastics to help with medical expenses in a very touching presentation. Fulton has been having some serious health issues lately.
Bobby Eaton, one half of the Midnight Express, has also had his share of health problems, was presented with the Workers Choice Award by the hosts of Sirius FM’s Busted Open

It was nice and a deserving honor to a true legend and I felt so bad for him that the reality of receiving a lifetime achievement to a place that was officially 93% empty had to be sobering beyond words.

They return to action but Socal Val who was sounding hoarse throughout the evening had lost her voice and an older gentlemen who appeared to be one of the producers took over. I loved her genuine enthusiasm and she looked so lovely.
Though she had been legitimately hoarse throughout the evening, I cynically joked that she had to bail because this was running so late & she was booked for another gig (see the flyer for Kevin Nash’s event below) – but she did stay till the end of the event.

Her replacement seemed exasperated by the even thinner crowd and other complications. What was originally scheduled as TNA Knockout Angelina Love vs. Mickie James was changed again due to James’ now pregnancy and was now billed as her facing Barbie Hayden.
Now at the moment of showtime it appeared Hayden was a no show & the producer kinda threw his hands in the air and asked the audience “So, do you guys want to see a women’s match or not?” – My answer was a resounding yes –
They only person they had to face her was a wrestler on the independent circuit named Miss Diss Lexia, but since she was from Dallas and the underdog we decided to root for her.
Here’s Angelina & her preparing for the match –

And how sad, as much as I was rooting for Miss Dislexia, being green as grass, what does she do? She gives poor Miss Love a freaking concussion.
Can you imagine how mad Angelina must have been? Here she was most likely doing this match as a favor & paid very little or at all with no chance this raises her profile and now she has to wrestle the rest of the weekend with a concussion.

The next one-two punch was the total highlight for me –

The first main event featured perhaps the greatest Mid-South tag team in history, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express vs. Genetic Perfection

I wasn’t aware that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express has continued to wrestle regularly all these years. I was pleasantly surprised at how well Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson could still work. This team was the total summation of my life from 1983 until 1986 – the last time I saw them. Naturally it would have been excellent to have them face the Midnight Express but as I mentioned above, those guys are in no shape to do this anymore sadly.
I was stunned when they hit their patented double dropkick & won the TCW Tag Team Championship.
To see them hit that & win the belts one more time brought tears to my eyes and was arguably my fave moment of the entire extended weekend. I hope those guys know that somehow.

The final match of the evening was the Junkyard Dog Memorial Cup Battle Royal. If that sounds familiar, you should know that Battle Lines was promoting this match long before the WWE was promoting the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal for WrestleMania.
JYD was easily the most popular hero of the territory (especially here in New Orleans where at the height of his popularity would sell out the Superdome).

Elijah Burke came out wearing tights in the exact same style as JYD did in Mid-South. They were white with “Thump” on the back and had stars & he wore a dog collar.

He eliminated Lance Hoyt for the win & the PA system even played JYD’s entrance music Queens’ Another One Bites the Dust as Burke celebrated by doing the Dog’s patented rope dance.I never thought I’d hear that music again at a live wrestling show and to hear it in New Orleans was something special. I can’t thank TCW enough for letting me experience these special specifics from my childhood again.

_________________________________INTERMISSION___________________________________Competing Events:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As you can see their was alot of competition tonight that and that the others were in NOLA proper could have accounted for such a low turnout, but realistically it may not have had much to do with it. Two of the competing events were at Tulane University where we were now headed for their (& ours) third event of the day that started at Midnight – which just gave a truly odd event the setting that it needed.

Kaiju Big Battel – Mcalister Auditorium at Tulane University – New Orleans

Could this day get any cooler, longer? – It was certainly about to get weirder as we made our way into New Orleans just before midnight and finally located Tulane University and secured parking just outside of it.  I overestimated the event as I was looking for a large venue on the campus and thought I could just follow the herd of people. Here we were, its late at night in creepy NOLA without a soul around. I finally see someone and desperately ask were the Auditorium is and of course the person is a mute and is gesticulating wildly and grunting the hitch-hiker from Creepshow.

We enter the campus grounds and I certainly don’t mean to make light of a very unfunny subject but the only adjective I can use to describe the very long and barren walk we took into the campus is rape-y.

We finally come to a clearing and see some action up ahead deep into the heart of the campus – Now it feels like a block party that’s just about to reach its apex – it had that late-night Rocky Horror vibe to it that people were ready to get weird.

The event was supposed to start at midnight but by 1220am they hadn’t even started seating people yet and the lobby of this university hall was buzzing with anticpation, punctuated by the roar of merchandise sales in abundance.

Full disclosure: We knew nothing about this event – Not the participants, the producers, its origin, what to expect, the storylines etc – NOTHING.
We just saw like a 30 sec video and thought it was gonna be some weird Japanese wrestling thing that started at midnight on a college campus and that was enough for us.
I had heard that they only have a few live events a year and that they sell out almost instantly & we didn’t have tickets so that was a definite concern.
I didn’t even see where they were selling tickets so we started to assume that it was sold out. The crowd was getting antsy so when they opened the doors finally people just started stampeding in and so I grabbed Jess and in we went – no ticket, no nothing.

Wrestling is a varied art form. The word can be used to refer to a number of different things that, once you’re familiar with the basics of the sport, are quite different. It can just as easily be used to refer to WWE’s sports entertainment approach as Japan’s puroresu, the southern-US approach of rasslin’, ROH’s serious athleticism, and TNA’s directionless nonsense.
All can accurately be described as professional wrestling but they all have their different, some more pronounced than others.
Out on the very fringes of the term sits what we were about to witness – the Kaiju Big Battel.
This is where wrestling meets Japanese monster movies, a combination so niche that no mainstream promotion would ever touch it and so specific that smaller companies would avoid it even as a one off. Because how would you even incorporate it as a one off? It’s a pairing that has to be embraced in order to work.

Some aspects of wrestling logic don’t apply to Kaiju Big Battel. The ring is presented as a cityscape which the competing kaiju use as a battleground. Traditional wrestling moves and holds are used sporadically. And, most notably, everyone competes as a kaiju character, most of whom are linked to one loose faction (heroes, rogues, or Dr Cube’s Posse) wearing a specially designed outfit. Suspension of disbelief is more required than usual and the promotion’s own logic has to be fully embraced. But it’s still unmistakably wrestling. There’s a ring and the base logic of a good guy facing a bad guy. It’s just that here the good guy might be a cardboard box robot and the bad guy a walking mushroom.

Our fears of sitting in someone else’s seats quickly subsided as to illustrate how much I had overestimated this event along with tonight’s fierce competition as this venue holds 2k their were less than a hundred people here and the ring was on a stage that looked like it reguarly holds High School talent shows.

It kicks off with this Weird Al look-alike in a white dinner jacket appropriately named Louden Noxious already at ringside high fiving fans and screaming unintelligibly into a microphone. He continued his screeching, which the crowd loved, as he dashed around the arena, clambered over chairs, and ran into the crowd below the stage before ending up in the ring. Once he’d made it there he promised us an evening of danger and mentioned the PPV broadcast. He’s a very good hype man, even if you can’t make out most of what he says.
After nearly six minutes of hype, during which he revealed that lead baddie Dr Cube was the new judge of New Orleans, Noxious introduced The Gambling Bug (it bites people and they become addicted to gambling). It had a bag allegedly containing ¥5,000 with it, to face Paco and Pedro, the Plantains, two guys actually dressed up as Plaintains –

Fighto 1- The Challenge

The Gambling Bug issued a challenge. He stated that no monster could ever lift him, or slam him thru a city high rise for that matter. He made a $33,000 bet to any one living or dead to take up this challenge. Enter Paco & Pedro, the Plantain Twins.

After some tumultuous action in the Big Ring and much urban destruction, both plantains picked up Gambling Bug and slamed him thru an abandoned tenement building full of stray cats. Gambling Bug threw a fit and Paco grabed the money and run. Pedro on the other hand was so excited about winning the money he failed to see his brother take off with the loot. He is so busy thinking of ways to spend their windfall that he fails to see The Gambling Bug pick up a 20 story building to smash onto his head. Gambling Bug then proceeded to tie up the unconscious Pedro and drag him away.

.Next saw the obviously super popular Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle take on Tucor and Sekhmet. Tucor is a slender brown kaiju with a beak and Craw has a giant right hand and a metal jaw. They are two of Dr Cube’s lead henchmen. Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle is, as you can probably guess, a tin of chicken noodles with arms and legs.

Fighto 2- Gumbo Grudge

Kung Fu Chicken Noodle came to warn the Kaiju fans to beware of spicy-hot gumbo-
Then a hungry Monger Kingu and Tucor rushed the ring and tried to open up KFCN’s can to make their own pot of gumbo.

In an impressive display Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle nailed both his opponents with Stunners and performed a moonsault. Unfortunately for him he missed, which allowed Tucor to pull him up and Samoan roll him through stack of buildings, reducing them to rubble. Amazingly Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle was able to stagger back to his feet as his foes posed. Both received splashes before Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle obtained the popular win with a double choke slam to which Louden Noxious exclaimed (and gave us the line of the weekend) “Its a CANNED FOOD DRIVE!”

After the match The Grudyin joined his Posse teammates in the ring. Unimpressed with their loss The Grudyin knocked their heads together. Sun Buster, a green clad hero with a NES controller for a forearm, was introduced as his opponent.

Fighto 3- The Cajun Breakfast

After the Grudyin came out and chastised his teammates,he grabbed Tucor’s box of looped fruity breakfast cereal and introduced it to Grudyin’s head. However the Ref was knocked out cold, so out came The Awful Waffle who took his place –

At some point during this, they parodied Mick Foley’s thumbtack bit but with gumballs that cause wacky hijinx as LN came out to the seated audience to pass the gumballs on to the fans. It was at this point that I looked over at Jess and said “If you had to describe what your doing & seeing right now to someone on the telephone, do you think you could do it accurately? – Answer: Hell no.

After that Louden Noxious said that there was no number one contender for the Grand championship and issued a challenge to anyone in the audience to participate . By pure coincidence the audience included kaiju hero Dusto Bunny (who has to be seen to be believed).

Fighto 5- Who Will Be Truly Great? (the MAIN EVENT)

Steam Powered Tentacle Boulder, stewart of the vacant championship, had determined that Dusto Bunny was to represent the heroes and representing Dr Cube’s Posse was to be the chaotic #13.

Next The Gambling Bug returned with Paco tied up and held hostage. Pedro was then introduced with the bag of yen he’d won fair and square earlier in the evening. It wasn’t entirely clear but it seemed as though the decision of the earlier match was under investigation. Dr Cube was introduced as a judge alongside his minions and Tucor. Cube ran through the case but the poor microphone made it impossible to hear most of what he said (in fairness the fact that he had a box on his head didn’t help). I did understand him sentencing The Gambling Bug to death though. Which seemed… excessive.

Cube’s Posse beat the monster down and carried it backstage. Tucor and the number one contender then turned Pedro and ejected Remsburg from the ring. The beating finished with Tucor leaping off the top rope to splash the Plantain through a pile of buildings. Seconds afterwards American Beetle rocked up and untied Paco, allowing the yellow ones to take out all members of the Posse, and Dr Cube himself, to send the crowd home happy.

Kaiju Big Battel is not going to be for everyone. I imagine many wrestling fans will find it jarring. I certainly wouldn’t be interested in watching it more than a once a year. But it’s a refreshing break from wrestling’s usual tropes and a chance to watch the sport through a different creative prism. Watched sporadically I think most wrestling fans with a sense of fun can enjoy Kaiju Big Battel’s product. And a large number of non-fans probably can too. Jess absolutely loved it, but agreed that she was happy that we didn’t pay to see it.

– The event was over just after 2am and we didn’t hit the freeway till closer to 3am and still had an hour long drive back to Picayune. A truly weird end to an extrodinary day.
Only to get up a few hours later for more excitement – Stay tuned for Part 3 IIII

Wrestlemania 30 Week Part 1: Drew Brees Charity Event + Jim Ross & Jake Roberts & more (2014)

Ok this will be a massive (but fun) undertaking to deliver this story in its entirety in order to tell you the complete story to satisfy you, myself and with respect to the events & people that we met/saw along the way this week.
It all started more than a year ago when my girlfriend Jess wanted to visit her bff Megan, who was soon to have her first child. I had never met Megan & her husband and was happy to do so, however they live in New Orleans – a city that has represented nothing but bad luck for me for over 10 years.

The Curse of New Orleans –

I don’t believe in such superstitions though many natives of NOLA would disagree with you & have their own unique brand of superstitions. I’ve been here on tour several times thoughout the years and each time was more miserable than the time before it.  Two days before we are set to leave I suffer the worst case of food poisoning in medical history – It was starting before we even got there.
Ironic however is that I WANT to love this city and if you know me, than you know that music, crawfish & culture are my passions so this should be MY city.
But historically it hasn’t been – not in the least.

I am pleased to announce that we survived the city and a week of total fun & insanity – However I am deeply saddened to also report that not all of us made it.
Since your reading this you probably have at least a cursory interest in Professional Wrestling and already know that the Ultimate Warrior who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the coming days after 18 years of being in exile & after finally receiving redemption died literally the next day.

I will go over all of that as this series unfolds – but for now – we had to get our asses to the Big Easy.

We made it to (not quite) NOLA to the quaint little town of Picayune, MS – just across the border on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain.
Took us over 11 hours by car and now we were staying 50 miles from NOLA that would be at least an additional 100 miles a day commute.

From the outside the motel we were staying at was a frightening sight (especially at night) and where I would normally have just drove past.
However the contrast to the inside was pleasantly surprising –

There were quite a few things wrong with this place, normally that wouldn’t matter but we were gonna be here for six nights and seven days.
However the lady that runs the place was very friendly and it forced us to go into town to buy things to make the place and little more livable.
In the process we kinda fell in love with this little coastal town. By the end of the week the guy at the gas station knew us by name (because I was having to fill up every other day) & made multiple trips to the post office, the grocery store, bank & a few other stops along the way.
We had become townies – We are not of the church going persuasion but we actually thought of attending service on Sunday & eat at local post-church staple
Fatty’s Seafood – but timing & weather had other plans for us.
After making our shithole by the freeway livable we crashed – We had a looooong week ahead.

Day 1 – April 3rd

So technically this was day 2 but the first of the wrestling events we had planned to attend as well as our first day of being in NOLA proper.
Supposed to be a vacation but I don’t do well with relaxing so I had some business in town and then we made it over to Megan’s house to met her infant daughter.
I didn’t stay long as I wanted to give her & Jess some time to themselves as her husband Zeke was also not home yet.
Jess is a good sport and likes the wrestling that I show her – has really become interested in the anthropological viewpoints that I share but what I had planned for the rest of the evening would be indulgent for most fans so instead of listening to an old timer tell stories all night, logically we had planned for me to fly solo while she spent the evening catching up with Megan.

Ringside: An Evening with Jim Ross – House of Blues – New Orleans (Early Show)

My luck was already changing as I knew that parking in the French Quarter to get to the House of Blues was gonna be a nightmare & unbelievably I parked directly in front of the club. Grabbed my ticket and headed inside just as the show was about to begin. A spoken word/one man show if you will with legendary wrestling announcer Jim Ross.
Ross has been touring the show for the past year which is his personal reflections of a life spent in the wrestling business.

After promising the crowd that he would not censor himself, either in terms of language or in the tales he would tell that night, Ross started off describing how he first got interested in wrestling, thanks to watching a match between the Assassins and the Kentuckians.
From there, he regaled the crowd with stories of working for “Cowboy” Bill Watts. Working for Watts changed his life, he said, and included some very funny stories about his time during wrestling’s territorial days. For an old Mid-South Wrestling guy like me – it was perfect.
True to his word, he didn’t filter his comments or stories, and fans howled listening him tell wild tales about subjects such as: washing down two fat naked guys; being offered $100 to take a nude picture of Andre the Giant; and one of his favorites, Dick Murdoch.
As naive as it sounds, it was odd to hear him curse & any hecklers or outbursts were stifled immediately –
At the very beginning a couple of guys in the front row were yelling the whole time & JR walked to edge of the stage told them that he didn’t need any help and with all due respect to “shut the fuck up”
The place exploded – I was happy as well as it was smooth sailing from there on out and a sign of good things to come from an otherwise polite crowd that was part an parcel a total contrast to what I dealt with last year.

He candidly spoke about a lot of matters, including providing his thoughts on recent WWE booking decisions & let a lot of his personality shine through during the show, taking fans through a hysterical story about stopping promoter Leroy McGuirk from murdering Ted DiBiase for dating his daughter (and for those who might not know, ended up marrying Brian Blair and serving as a WWF ring announcer).
J.R. didn’t focus a ton on his time in the WWF, but I suspect that was because he wanted to save some stories for his eventual autobiography and his Ross Report podcast.
His time in WCW was quickly recapped, as was his 20+ year stint in WWE. For those, he kept his stories to a minimum during his prepared comments, and rather touched on most of those times during the last 90 minutes, which was an open Q&A session.

This portion of the evening saw the night’s emcee, Live Audio Wrestling producer John Pollock, go into the crowd to take the fans’ questions for Ross.
Literally everyone there was from the U.K or other parts or Europe. It’s unbelievable the impact its had over there and that impact will be felt on Monday (stay tuned).

Speaking of Mid-South Wrestling,  with about 20 minutes left in the show, as a surprise for the audience he was joined by legendary manager Jim Cornette.

Again for an old Mid-South fanatic like me this was so ideal and very special. Cornette was (as you would expect) just as candid & didn’t look much different than he did was I was a kid 30 years ago. For me this was the perfect exclamation point to a wonderful and special evening.
Some might say I got the short end of the stick as for the late JR was joined by no less than Stone Cold Steve Austin. Given their storied frienship and Austin’s pedigree & known outrageousness I’m sure it was a good time – but again historically for me Cornette was the better fit.
I even met him on the street as I was getting in my car. Since I was parked in front of the club, he was too and we had a great talk.

I was thinking “Man, if I stop this guy he’s gonna get mobbed” and I’m not really a picture/autograph guy but he played such a huge role in my memories as a kid I couldn’t resist and he was happy for the attention and eager to talk. Good because I was eager to listen. Good times.

An evening with Jake Roberts – Jackson Brewery Bistro Bar – New Orleans

The next portion of my evening came and went pretty fast and devolved into something else entirely than what was earlier advertised.
I had planned to attend JR’s early show so I could make this show and then the charity even later tonight and Jax’s Bistro was literally four blocks up Decatur St. from the House of Blues.
However this was originally a ticketed event & one-man show that mirrored JR’s, but since Jake “The Snake” Roberts didn’t want to have to compete with him and already had a similar event booked at HOB for the following night, Jake did an admirable thing by refunding anyone that bought at ticket and recomended them going to JR’s show and then just swinging by at their leisure at his event where he would be just hanging out.

As you can see the perpetually dysfucntional Jake Roberts & his “event” was as loosely held together as the posters and t-shirt that are barely sticking to the wall.
This was a pretty sad sight as it was just a small bar, upstairs from a high-end restaruant with Jake Roberts posing for pics (for $20 a pop…with YOUR camera no less) and selling merch only. The small crowd, again exclusively British, many who like me just came from JR’s show, with their expendaable income , forked over the cash for an Iphone selfie. No thanks –

Drew Brees Stars 4 Kids Kaboom/Charitybuzz Event – New Orleans Museum of Art – New Orleans

It was actually at this time as I was returning to my car from Jake Roberts’ thing that I ran into Jim Cornette – and after obsessively checking every lock on my car somehow I returned to it to discover that I left my driver’s side door unlocked!
Again I’m still traumatized from all the bad luck I’ve had in this city so it was unthinkable that I would do this and a sign that my luck was truly changing, the car was the same as it was as I had left it. Thank goodness.
After talking with Cornette I quickly changed into my suit and headed over to the New Orleans Museum of Art. WWE’s finest were teaming up with New Orleans Saints‘ quarterback Drew Brees and comedic actor Marlon Wayans for Superstar for Kids. The charity event to benefit the Brees Dream Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs.

As a member of the press, I somehow miracualously secured a press pass to the event to cover the red carpet party & celebrity auction.
The museum was decked out in style – I’ve been to some pretty high-profile events at SXSW in Austin as well as a few others in Los Angeles but this was on a whole other level.
Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella

Summer Rae

Last week, WWE kicked off a global online auction to benefit these charities The auction features unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences with WWE Superstars, professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities. During the Superstars for Kids red carpet party, Wayans lead an additional live auction where incredible experiences were made available for bidding.

Still dizzy from how insanely gorgeous Summer Rae looked, I was positively stunned I was standing so close to Hulk Hogan. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet quite a few celebrities and rarely do I get starstruck but this was totally one of those times. I was a raving Hulkamaniac as a kid and regardless of what he has devolved to and his ill-advised forays into reality television aside – there stood the Hulkster and I was beaming. Not quite as radiant as these two however –

Lillian Garcia & Maryse

Whoever thinks that long-time announcer Lillian Garcia isn’t totally hot is a fool. By comparison to the jaw-dropping twenty-somethings running around the ring she might be easier to overlook but if you were face to face with her you would be a believer. I also have nothing original to add and can only echo the same tired sentiment regarding Maryse’s marriage to the Miz“How did THAT dude land such perfection?” – Good job sir.

Wanna feel old (& creepy)? – I kept seeing this gorgeous blond girl everywhere (the bombshell in the above picture) but I didn’t know who she was, but everyone knew her. I just assumed she was an actress or something. Ever seen the wrestling documentary Beyond the Mat? – If you have, than you of course haven’t forgotten that it contains one of the most disturbing yet powerfully touching moments in cinematic history when their profiling Mick Foley. The scene of him being legitimately hurt in front of his family and their reaction that climaxes in his toddler daughter trying to make sense of it all as Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World plays is something that you will never forget. The stunner in the above pic with the movie star good looks is Mick Foley’s daughter Noelle who is now in her 20’s.
I am very old –

Stay tuned for Part II – The first ever Mid-South Fan Fest and the indescribeable Kaiju Big Battel!
