The Stars & Cosplayers of Dallas Fan Days Expo (Oct/2017)

If you’ve never been to a Comic-Con (what are you waiting for?) essentially it’s a market & trade show – at it’s base, it’s just one big store. All the vendors gathered together in one convenient place. To get the fans to come shop, the convention books stars (past & present) for Q&A’s, autograph sessions & photo ops.
But it’s the people that attend that make it so much more.

The fans of everything that make up this culture are so dedicated that they dress up in amazing cosplay some have prepared all year long to show off t’s just SO MUCH FUN.

Dallas Comic Con Fan Days – October 20th-22nd – Irving Convention Center – Irving, TX

The Dallas Comic Con organization holds three shows a year – The big Expo in downtown Dallas over the Summer and then two sattelite events dubbed Fan Days held in the smaller venue in Irving, one in the Spring and this show in the Fall.

Sadly, four of the main actors set to make an appearance, including headliner Matt Smith, canceled just a few weeks prior to the event due to scheduling conflicts. However their were still lots of great guests on hand for super fun & candid Q&A panels, autograph sessions & photo ops.

Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale)

Ruth Connell (Rowena in the CW series Supernatural)

While the guests, organization, and activities were great the cosplayers really put the event over the top. You could find almost every character imaginable in attendance!

Scenes from Project A-Kon 28 w/ Cosplay, Music & more (June/2017)

Billed as the largest convention of it’s kind Project A-Kon, this the annual Anime & Convention Expo, this year being their 28th installment is something that in spite of having little to zero interest or knowledge of anime & it’s culture, is an event I now attend yearly.

Project A-Kon 28 – June 8th-11th – Tarrant Count Convention Center – Fort Worth, TX

So now, back for the attack as it were I was hoping the navigation process might be a bit easier after last year’s confounding experience to discover A-Kon’s new home in Fort Worth was ideal & perfect for this event. Also as a testament to it’s growth, now needing a major downtown facility to host & contain all it’s madness from concerts to panels, artist galleries & more.

My A-Kon experience this year was a bit of a brief to muted one, but fun nonetheless, since I wasn’t DJ’n this year I could focus on a few other interests & enjoy myself with less responsibility. I arrived late Friday night in time to catch Pentagon Japan:

A Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 2014. In February 2015, the band released their debut album titled, Call Me.

Right after to run over to the Hilton for anticipated group photo shoot that was thankfully just across the street.

Virgin Killer Sweater Photoshoot

I get over to the Hilton to the assigned meeting room for the Virgin Killer Sweater Photoshoot – What is a VKS? Google it (or just keep reading) So all the participants would be wearing their own version of a VKS.

Now, given that this brand of cosplay is specifically female & quite provocative, the turn out for patron & participant quickly overwhelmed the tiny room that was originally booked. However, have no fear as led by cosplay superstar Jenny Desu thinking fast on her feet she quickly improvised and instructed everyone to assemble in the foyer on the second level.

Now let’s break it down: All involved were broken down into the following groups in order of distance:

Cosplayers
Pro Photographers or those there at a professional capacity like myself
Supporters/Onlookers
Total creeps
Everyone else

Separating us from the cosplayers was an assigned videographer (in need of some serious anger management) giving direction to an already out of control scene. While VKS is quickly becoming the Harley Quinn of Anime in terms of popularity in choice of cosplay, I was interested in capturing this event at it’s apex. Now what happened next was throwing the train that was already off the tracks into a spiral.
Let me disclaim: I’m all about inclusion & equality, I count members of the LGBTQ community as some of my closest friends, however being vulgar & obnoxious is simply that regardless of your orientation. The scene already chaotic when a group of super flamboyant MEN, in VKS’ aggressively crashed the front of the shoot, competitively posing like this shit was suddenly Studio 54.

They weren’t there for equality & inclusion, they were there to TAKE OVER & bring all the attention on themselves. Male or female they were hideously inappropriate & I find it to be completely fair that for a cosplay that is gender specific, is to be not only my expectation but also my preference.
Between, horrible lighting & primitive equipment & a shitshow of circumstances to deal with, not only do these pictures suffer greatly but I was this close to bailing on the whole thing. However among the dysfunction was glaring ray of light:

See on the pic on the right there above? In a sea of gorgeous & talented cosplayers shone a true superstar –  Lexyi C –  I just wanted this to end quickly now so that I could salvage this endeavor by getting some solo shots of her. The cosplayers (her included) all seemed a little shell shocked too from all the dischord so as things seemed to start to disapate & anticipating her popularity I approached quickly to see if she would be interested in a solo shoot.

Lexyi C.

Thankfully this started a trend that led to several more mini-shoots with some other great cosplayers.

After wrapping up there, headed back over to the convention center for the late-night rave that I’m usually performing at, to meet up with cosplay superstar & good friend Ashley Williamson, this time to enjoy the rave instead of having to work it.

I didn’t return until the final day on Sunday and walked around, the following is the best of the cosplay I saw, photographed or saw posted by a million different photographers to give you an idea of what the experience was like.

Dallas Fan Expo w/ Mark Hamill, the cast of Rocky Horror, awesome cosplay & more (April 2017)

Dallas Fan Days Expo – March 31st – April 2nd – Dallas Convention Center – Dallas, TX

The Dallas Comic Con organization holds three shows a year: Two sattelite events – one in the Summer & again in the Fall.
This event, the BIG one in downtown Dallas dubbed Fan Days held is the largest of it’s kind in the area.

To say there was ALOT going on is an understatement, not just at the Expo but Dallas in general & I ever the masochist had signed up to cover it all.
Between pulling double duty at the Dallas International Film Festival happening simultaneously, Edgefest, Wrestlemania & a few gigs of my own performing as my alter ego DJ TrickyKid, I set off to experience one unforgettable extended weekend.

Friday – March 31st

Normally the big guns don’t come out to till main Saturday but this year the Expo came out guns’ a blazin with two panels back to back featuring heavyweights Stan Lee, the creator of it all & Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.

Thanks to the busy schedule I would have to wait till Sunday to see Hamill in his Batman panel & sad to have had to miss this one especially with the recent passing of Carrie Fisher, this was sure to be a memorable experience other than the obvious but had to take solace knowing I’d see him in Florida soon at Star Wars Celebration.
However, Stan Lee, the master himself was certainly not to be missed as while we’ve heard it before (& as recently as 3 months ago at Marvel’s New Year in Dallas) that this was HIS LAST TEXAS APPEARANCE ever.
Regardless, Stan at 94 years young is still so charming & funny and a master storyteller it was not to be missed on it’s on accord.

While the questions could have been screened at bit better that led to the material becoming a bit stale and repetitive and certainly a much more muted affair that past appearances it was still a perfect moment seeing the legend riding off into the sunset and shout Excelsior! with him just one more time.

That evening I headed on over to the National Video Game Museum to meet up with MC/partner in crime, my man Tekforce to DJ a private party to commemorate their one year anniversary. If you haven’t checked this place out yet, it’s a must for any gamer or simply lover of fun & history.

Saturday – April 1st

What is a Con without cosplay right? To start the day Pro Cosplay Superstars Leanna Vamp & Jessica Nigiri held a panel ahead of the awesome cosplay contest later that evening (see below)

I was hoping it was April’s Fool to hear that two of the guests I was looking most forward to meeting & interviewing, Willa Holland & Eliza Dushku had cancelled but alas it was true ?
However, all was not lost as the theme this year was centered around The Rocky Horror Picture Show & most of the cast were here in some capacity & how are you gonna throw a Rocky Horror party without Meat Loaf?

Meat Loaf

This was a real trip – I’ve always been drawn to personalities that are truly one of a kind & Meat Loaf qualifies in spades.
His Rocky Horror credits are just the tip of the iceberg of his bona fides. Dramatic singer & actor, funny as hell & just honest and unique & a nickname of a derided entree for middle schoolers everywhere.
This Q&A was particularly interesting as he would shift from being hilariously playful to DEAD serious, almost arrestingly so.
He also was clearly medicated or in the recovery stage of a recent surgery as his speech was quite impeded at times & often needing the assistance of his wife (whom was seated next to me) but it didn’t prevent this to being one of my fave panels of the weekend.
Cheers to Kid Cadet for moderating in fine fashion (figuratively & literally).

Sunday – April 2nd

It started with what was billed as another goodbye in the form of the original Batman & Robin – Adam West & Burt Ward making their final con appearances together.

Earlier this year (& most recently at Texas Pinball Festival) I had the opportunity to play the new Batman ’66 machine – a new state of the art masterpiece that celebrates that wacky show that introduced most to the caped crusader. Check it out when you get a chance!

Speaking of Batman – Mark Hamill returned today as our gotham hero’s nemesis the Joker who he voices on Batman: The Animated Series along with Kevin Conroy who voiced Batman himself. Together promoting the recently released Batman: The Killing Joke film

Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill

I’m proud to say that I was there at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim when Hamill along with his other Star Wars cast mates made a surprise appearance after the surprise of the first screening of the trailer for The Force Awakens.
However, it didn’t give the chance for Hamill to be himself in the way that this panel did & boy did he take advantage of it.
I had no idea he was so animated & charming. At 65 years old, he acted and moved like a kid in his early 20s & was totally irresistable.
May the Force always be with you sir.

The Cast of Rocky Horror w/ Barry Bostwick etc

This was unusual as while Rocky Horror was the central theme to this year’s Expo, while they decided to have the big Q&A with the cast in one of the smallest rooms at the furthest end of the convention so inconvenient I missed the first half from simply trying to find it as it were some dirty little secret.
When I arrived to discover that the main star of the film Tim Curry, who was definitely here in the building was nowhere to be found at this panel.
Instead you had Barry Bostwick, who held his own greatly & uproariously funny alongside Patricia Quinn who’s over-the-top British mannerisms & attire so boorish I really couldn’t decifer if it was all an act.

Vendors

Of course at it’s core, a comic con is really just a marketplace & the celebrities are brought in to attract you to the vendors who sell just about anything a fan of this medium could dream of.

I didn’t have a whole lot of time to peruse like I wanted to but on the last day (in the last hour even) I met Jon Hughes, an indie comic book writer & publisher of Overground Comics who had such an impressive display of new offerings of titles that I bought the first issue of everything he had.
The art is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Check these guys out!

The Cosplayers of Dallas Fan Expo 2017 –

And what is a con without the awesome cosplayers and this con had some of the most impressive I’ve seen since I started coming three years ago.

Ashley Williamson

A frequent guest & co-host of our weekly TrickyKid Radio Podcast & featured cosplayer right in these very pages, Ashley Williamson is a superstar and that’s putting it mildly. Everything you see her do is handmade, one of kind creations born from her brilliant mind, unstoppable desire & unwavering work ethic. She is at the top of her game & she’s only getting started.

Cosplay Deviants

The nerds have truly inherited the earth – with pro or amateur, cosplay has taken over & Cosplay Deviants take the tease out of the sexualized approach of sexy cosplay to deliver the real deal. Their site boasts of “actual naughty nerds who love to interact, upload videos, pictures and write in their blogs about how they kicked ass at their local game store from around the world Undressing the Art of Playing Dress Up.”
I caught up with the Deviants back at A-Kon last year & was super impressed with their work ethic & business model so I was happy to see them have a footprint at Fan Days this year.

Nerds Unite! Inside Texas Pinball Festival + the Cosplayers of All-Con & more

Pinball is a long passion of mine – I’ve always loved it – The sights and sounds that surround its culture, the artistry everything.
Most people think pinball is simply keeping a silver ball from getting past you by using flippers, repeat – But as anyone in attendance here today will tell you, that’s just the beginning.
No matter its motif, every machine is different and the individuality, engineering & the craftsmanship put into one of these is the kind of greatness I’ve always aspired to.
This show draws people from all over the United States and beyond. It is one of the largest shows in the industry
Over 400 vintage and new pinball machines, classic arcade games and slot machines for sale and set on free play. Vendors selling parts, supplies, equipment and memorabilia all weekend. There were presentations by well known pinball artist and designers and answering questions from the audience. Door Prizes for pinball related memorabilia drawn hourly throughout the weekend, included a grand prize raffle drawing Sunday awarding a full size Pinball Machine to benefit the Red Cross.

Texas Pinball Festival 2017 – March 24th-26th – Frisco Convention Center – Frisco, TX

The Texas Pinball Festival  is one of the largest of its kind in the country. It’s only 16 years old, but in that time it’s moved from a small arcade in Arlington to the 45,000-square-foot Frisco convention center. The most recent three-day festival delivered more than 400 pinball machines.
Pinball has made quite a comeback thanks to a plucky group of indie developers such as Jersey JackSpooky Pinball, who have helped the game catch up to the digital age.

There is also a great deal of nostalgia of course regarding pinball – whereas these crazy new games are exciting & bridge the past to the present & give the industry what it needs it’s also great to walk up a play old machines that are exactly the ones you remember in the places you first discovered them. There is something almost indescribable about that feeling – the art met with the sounds & the unlikely venue you probably first played them.

So with that in mind the two big names that were invited to the this year’s soiree were Cassandra Peterson & Sam JonesElvira Mistress of the Dark & Flash Gordon, the savior of the universe himself.
I’ve built a nice rapport with Sam over time & even most recently we spent about 4 days at events together at Marvel’s New Year event culminating with Sam making an appearance on our weekly TrickyKid Radio Podcast.
Still, it’s not everyday that you get to play an original 1981 Flash Gordon pinball machine & WITH Flash Gordon!

Cassandra Peterson appeared as herself, looking absolutely radiant and not just as some would say “for her age”.
At 62 years young, she looks like a stunning woman half her own age & is gorgeous for any age.

Joined by pinball creator legends Greg Freres & Dennis Nordman who fulfilled a desire for Cassandra, herself a lifelong pinball enthusiast, when they launched Elvira & The Party Monsters for Bally in 1989 for a fun panel showcasing their almost 30 years of collaboration that will continue as they made the exciting announcement that there will be a third in the series as the long awaited follow up to 1996’s Scared Stiff.

Walking around the expo is so fun, seeing everyone having such a good time and excited to try to new machines and visit the old ones like they were old friends.
Many of the new ones you can’t just walk up and play. Sought after new games garner big lines, like Jersey Jack Pinball’s Dialed In!, which incorporates cameras and Bluetooth connectivity; and American Pinball’s Houdini, which made its premiere at the festival. The line to play Heighway Pinball’s new Alien machine is so long that they’ve got guardrails to organize it.

Alien

Stern’s new Aerosmith table and the very fun Batman ’66 (right)
& with Elvira in the house, there were plenty of chances to play Elvira & The Party Monsters!

However, as cool as all these new machines are & even the older ones from my youth, for me my favorite part of the festival like this is the custom machines. Think about it: Good or bad, they are one of kind & that will always be attractive to me. And their were some great ones:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (left)
& Total Annihalation (right)

Dallas Cowboys (left)
& this crazy, transparent, poker themed machine that was super fun to play

On Sat, there was the premier screening of a documentary on boutique company Spooky Pinball, a great story that deserves to be told for pinball & non-pinball fans alike about the unlikely upstart and soaring success of the company made up of a family of good people proving hard work and moral fiber pays off.
Spooky debuted two new pinball machines as their liscensing resume is impressively growing, this year with Domino’s Pizza & the Jetsons, debuted Rob Zombie last year, so only fitting that they will be unveiling Alice Cooper next year,

Spooky Pinball Family

…and most importantly what I love most about pinball and this convention is that it is enjoyed by everyone from every walk of life, almost as an unintended unifyer, but united just the same. Good times and until next year.

All-Con Dallas 2017 – March 16th-19th – Crowne Plaza – Addison, TX

So this might be a bit interesting, we (sorta) covered All-Con last year, meaning that the “press agent” was acting like a gatekeeper & actually denied us credentials. It was (like this year) taking place during SXSW in Austin so I wasn’t gonna be around for much of it anyway.
A reputable cosplayer I was seeing last year was already going so I made some brief appearances inspite of the sleghting.
This year almost exact same story (dating a different reputable cosplayer however) & this time we were given credentials along with a heroes’ welcome. So now that they’d seen the error of their ways, I thought I would check it out in spite of SXSW still looming large.

Quite honestly there isn’t really much to report (at least not from me) as stories of this year’s con vary so greatly I was beginning to wonder if we were even at the same con as some of the stories I heard & pictures I saw.
Apparently if you were not there late Friday night or at all on Sat you had a completely different experience & that was the one I had.
Still with them changing hotels this year, I can’t see it being anything but a severely muted affair given the limited space & half-baked programming.
This is a Con with a serious identity crisis (& poor organization skills) it really can’t decide what it want’s to be. Maybe that’s the purpose of calling it All-Con which is inclusive and great in theory but feel it’s actually to it’s detriment.

You walk upstairs to a vendor room that can be overly perused in under 20 mins, attend a few criminally under attended panels in some off-shoot rooms & go downstairs for a few rooms of gaming. Next time I won’t miss the Saturday night party.

Neil Kaplan (middle)

Vendors Richard & Brooke

On the final day Hana Li gave a slideshow presentation called Nerdlesque on the increasing influence nerd culture is having on Burlesque & all the sub-genres that it employs.

The Cosplayers of All-Con

And of course, what is a Con without the awesome cosplayers that work tirelessly to display the fruits of their labor?
And there were some great ones.

Erica Muse

Erica is an established cosplayer who’s resume boasts over 200 different characters – To illustrated her prowess, I’ve shot her before and didn’t even recognize her when I ran into her here as Black Cat.

She dazzled all weekend & was part of an ambitious photoshoot spear headed by bodypaint veteran Pink Pit Bull
The work that went into this is only paralleled by how stunning the finished product became.

Jill Perkins (right)

Charlotte Dolan

Another very talented cosplayer that has been making waves on the con scene is Charlotte Dolan based in Dallas/Fort Worth area.
We first met her early last year & she has consistently upped her game to the point that she was voted by our readers into our Top 10 Cosplayers list last year. This year, she’s really kicked things into high gear with some outstanding work.

….and only at a fun Con could you see a mock duel featuring Bain, Wyatt Earp & Walter Sobchek!

Until next year!

Dallas Comic Con Fans Days – Panels w/ Christian Slater, Millie Bobby Brown, awesome Cosplay & more(Oct/2016)

The Dallas Comic Con organization holds three shows a year – The big Expo in downtown Dallas over the Summer and then two sattelite events dubbed Fan Days held in the smaller venue in Irving, one in the Spring and then again in the Fall.

Friday – Day 1

So the weekend kicks off with abbreviated hours, only open for 4hrs usually for press guys like me to do interviews or super fans that want to experience it all.

Mick Foley

The Hardcore Legend & WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has been doing the “con rounds” last couple of years but has seen his star on the rise recently with his new position as General Manager of Monday Night RAW & even his own reality series with his family focusing on his impossibly charming daughter Noelle called Holy Foley!

Sadly the “bad real estate” of going on last on Friday is similar to having to follow the Undertaker at Wrestlemania, not a great spot to be in and so of the Grand Ballroom that seats thousands, their were easily less than 200 people. So much so that when the moderator announced him Mick didn’t appear because he thought their was no way such a lackluster introduction was real and even called the guy out for which I thought was cool.
Foley is always a delight and enjoyable, he took questions from the crowd for about 20 mins before heading back to his booth for signings.

With such a legend in town it inspired some really great wrestling themed cosplay around the convention.

Dee Rich of The Lady Scarlett Cosplay (right)

Speaking of Cosplay
For the panel thankfully, I was joined by a superhero – Cosplayer extroidinaire Star Dust who came to my rescue in full Wonder Woman regalia.

Since we only had a brief window for daylight I was so pleased to be able to capture some great shots of her amazing cosplay before heading upstairs for the first panel with Tori Spelling.

Tori Spelling

Saturday – Day 2

So the second day upon us the convention is in full swing with a full day of panels & signings, contests & 10s of thousands of fans eager to display their hard fought cosplay & secure amazing purchases from the vendor showroom.

Christian Slater

Making his first appearance on the Con circuit is legendary actor Christian Slater now star of the hit show Mr. Robot

He shared how he won the role of the title character noting that his characters in Heathers and Pump up the Volume were hackers, of a kind. This was a thoroughly enjoyable panel and Slater was funny, genuine and seemed very pleased to be there and was very engaging.
One of the best panels of the whole weekend.

Caught some outstanding cosplay & met some awesome fans leading up to the annual cosplay contest.

Cosplay Contest

Their were some great contestants this year as always along with an impressive judges panel of seasoned veteran cosplayers.

Sunday – Day 3

Started the day with a panel the minute I arrived and rushed from the backstage elevator to get to in time.
The phenomenon that is Stranger Things was everywhere at this convention and I too am a fan so I was greatly anticipating the Q&A with cast member Millie Bobby Brown who plays the mysterious Eleven to wit her panel started at appropriately – 11am

Millie Bobbi Brown

As I mentioned, I too am a fan of the Netflix series but I’ve only seen 3 of the 8 existing episodes and seemingly like most at this convention, I too am totally hooked. I was hoping to binge watch the rest before this panel to avoid spoilers & able to get any & all references.
That didn’t happen but thankfully I managed to avoid getting any plot twists ruined for me.
What was totally unexpected (for me at least) is that Millie is a freaking force of nature. For real.

Seriously – first of all since I knew very little about her the person, I didn’t know she was British, secondly her character (at least in the first three episodes) rarely if at all speaks. Lastly, she’s only 12 years old
However, this pre-teen had more poise, grace and weapons grade wit & animated with a worldliness that I and the collective 3,000 or so in attendance will never know in our combined adult lives. How does that happen? She was funny, staggeringly smart, she rapped, had impeccable timing with humor and the perfect charm. I’m totally signing up for finishing school as I write this.
This most entertaining panel stole the show and ended with a special guest Matthew Lewis of Harry Potter fame.

Thankfully since she’s new to attention and her fame literally exploded out of nowhere & she is a pre-teen girl she loves the interaction, was genuine with the mob of fans lining up to see her and even roamed the floor wearing a mask to have a little fun with unsuspecting patrons.
Good times.

Like Mick Foley had his wrestling cosplay following – the impact of Stranger Things was everywhere.

….and after the panel Star Dust returned to bless the entire convention with her stunning Dragonball Z cosplay & kickass moves!

……and speaking of kickass, what is a superhero without an opponent right? As Star & I were headed up the escalator I spotted the perfect badass I was looking for to setup my favorite shots of the entire weekend.

Meet Ashlynn Starbuck

Her whole vibe was infinitely cool, super talented and one of the most deadly & presence filled cosplayers I’ve had the pleasure of meeting thus far.
She will be co-hosting this week’s Cosplay Culture episode & look for her in her own feature right here at Tricky-Kid.com soon!

With the runaway success of the Suicide Squad franchise and the summer movie, only second to Stranger Things the most popular character was expectedly Harley Quinn & their were some really great ones.

Charlotte Dolan

Joanie Brosas

I wrapped up this amazing weekend with someone who many would consider the Queen of Cosplay (she was voted #1 cosplayer in 2015 by our readers & listeners of TrickyKid Radio).
I first met Joanie Brosas in her hometown of Salt Lake City in 2015 at the SLC Comic-Con Fan Xperience.
That con & meeting Joanie both set off a chain reaction that inspired me to attend almost a dozen more events since that truly introduced me to the Cosplay community & develop a deep appreciation for this art form.

This girl is a true fan who also just happens to be impossibly attractive. Her Twitter feed is a delight of socially engaging inquiries, inspired photos & body/image positive messages that promote acceptance of all. Seriously, no one is doing cosplay this legit, this hot, with such a fun, positive attitude.

I had been wanting to sit down and catch up with her since I last saw her at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim last year in which time her popularity has just (deservingly) exploded. We were finally in the same town at the same again and I was delighted to have her on the show.

It almost didn’t happen though as Joanie endured a nightmare travel day to make it to Dallas for her first time (& sadly her return trip was even worse) As a testament of her dedication to her craft & fans, she never complained and was all smiles & a total joy to speak to.
We had so much fun & was the perfect way to end such an great weekend at Dallas Comic Con Fan Days.

Dallas Comic Con Fan Expo + DFW GI Joe & Action Figure show & more (Summer 2016)

Kicking off the Con season in Dallas full force with two of the biggest conventions happening the same weekend.
A-Kon & Dallas Comic Con’s Fan Expo event – What’s a nerd to do? In my case – go to both.
You can check out our coverage of A-Kon 27 here
Now over to the Convention Center for……

Dallas Comic Con’s Fan Expo – June 3rd-5th – Dallas Convention Center – Dallas, TX

Let’s get a few things out of the way to start – if you’ve never been to one of these: Essentially it’s a market & trade show – at it’s base, it’s just one big store. All the vendors gathered together in one convenient place. To get the fans to come shop, the convention books stars (past & present) for Q&A’s, autograph sessions & photo ops (which they sell for a premium).
Personally I would never pay for someone’s autograph but I almost suspended that policy this year for Stan Lee who was making his last Con appearance in Dallas.

However, one thing is for sure is that the fans of everything that make up this culture are so dedicated that they are more than willing & happy to part with their cash to support something that has given them so much joy. Everybody wins – not to mention it’s just SO MUCH FUN.

Day 1 (for me) Saturday June 4th

So I arrived late in the afternoon due to my dual coverage of A-Kon & I didn’t wanna be bouncing back in forth.
My plan was to do A-Kon on Friday, split it on Sat on just Fan Expo on a very awesome & packed Sunday.
Disappointed that I missed Q&A panels from both Frank Miller & John Cusack, I was excited just the same to arrive right on time for C-3P0 himself.

This had to be one of the more interesting & certainly most entertaining of these types of fan Q&A’s I’ve ever attended.
What you can expect usually is the subject arrives & is often interviewed by a moderator who asks questions designed to plug the talent’s latest offerings & then fans lineup behind a microphone so the subject can field fan sourced questions for about 20-30 mins.
That can sometimes be the best part of the experience due to it’s spontaneity (given when it doesn’t devolve into fans crying and telling personal stories of tragedy that they somehow equate with the subject and how their performances have somehow saved them from real-life impending doom….that shit SUUUUUCKKS).

Instead, Anthony Daniels, a master performer & story-teller forewent a moderator, stood the entire time & switched between an adopted faux annoyed celebrity (for comic relief sake) & his C-3P0 persona as he stalked around the room basically turning the occasion into street theatre right before your eyes. It was masterful.

He would tell stories and then act out like full scenes with perfect dialogue and voice affectations, certainly more than anyone here had bargained for.
Bless you Mr. Daniels, it was wonderful. Probably my fave part came when a young boy around 11 or so asked “What is your favorite part of being in Star Wars?” and without missing a beat Daniels replied “My favorite part is being in front of you today sharing stories my fine young man”.
Magical.

Cosplay Contest

Of course it wouldn’t be a Comic Con without the amazing cosplayers roaming around in their awesome often self-made costumes that really make up the spirit of the con. Even if they weren’t competing this is essentially what the con is about as what would it be without enthusiastic fans?

Lauralai Woodstock & Ricky May (right)

I returned to the same spacious room where Anthony Daniels had given such a memorable performance earlier for the official Cosplay Contest.

Judge Panel

Hosts

Hosted by dude on the left (Joker) who remained in character throughout which was only slightly annoying & at at times his quick retort was actually quite hilarious. Definitely an improvement over the guy on the right who’s effeminate, elitist sounding voice afflictions (that mirror comic-book guy from The Simpsons) give me hives.

Contestants

I stuck around to shoot for as long as I could before heading back over to A-Kon but as you can see the entries lined up wrapped the room twice.
Impressive displays by all & congratulations to the winners.

Day 2 (for me) Sunday

Returned bright & early for a packed day loaded with great guests. The focus of today was going to be the amazing panels they had scheduled seemingly one awesome attraction after the other back-to-back all day. This was perfect given my double-duty with A-Kon status as I wasn’t returning to the anime fest and practically everything I wasn’t interested in covering was today.

Lucy Hale

Perfect start to an amazing day with one of my favorite actresses from one of my favorite shows, the always impressive Lucy Hale
from Pretty Little Liars.

Her panel was in the large auditorium room where the Cosplay Contest (see above) was held yesterday but today it was freezing in there.
Prior to her arrival they were playing the PLL theme song Secret from The Pierces on a loop. I realized that I’d never heard the song in it’s entireity & while it’s a great song, they played it so many times I don’t think even the die-hard fans in attendance are ready to hear it again anytime soon haha.
Her Q&A was hosted by one the Fan Expo coordinators (who looked just like my man Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween).
Lucy entered looking perfectly chic as expected but delightfully candid (she too was freezing) & great with the fans.

Her followers are fanatical so alot of the “questions” devolved into crying and tales of personal tragedy (this happens way more often than you would expect at these things I’m discovering) but she handled it all like a pro & some fans she’s got to know personally over the years (see below).

In addition to the Q&A Lucy also participated in autograph signings & photo ops. The girl in the picture on the right also attended the Q&A & one of the fans Lucy mentioned by name as she has an incredible story of overcoming some pretty intense odds.

With Chewbacca Mom who Lucy answered as the person she was most looking forward to meeting at the Expo (left)
& with designer Janelle Hansen (right)

In a nutshell Lucy is just a nice Southern girl from Memphis (who just happens to be devastatingly gorgeous & talented) & her success doesn’t appear to have changed that. I got to hang with her a bit a few Summers ago when she released her country album Road Between & performed at the State Fair of Texas while I do was doing a social media campaign for Chevy & she was as charming & down to earth as you would hope she’d be.

Todd Mcfarlane & Stan Lee

This was special beyond description regardless of who you are or what your specific interests were. Stan Lee (who sadly announced this would be his final Con visit to Dallas) was pure magic loaded with adjectives only he could invent.

Led by long-time friend & collaborator, legendary comic artist & toy creator Todd Mcfarlane, watching the rapport of these two masters was enough but what Lee brought to the table was inspiring enough to take your breath away if you weren’t so busy laughing at his masterful quips.
Seriously, at any age this was perfect, but at almost 94 years young to still have that fire & maintain the same enthusiasm that has brought so much joy to so many for so long (& watching Mcfarlane who’s half his age trying to keep up with it) was a life-affirming gesture from one of the greatest minds of the 20th Century – Bless you Stan Lee – Excelsior!

Before the next round of panels I hit the main floor where the Cosplay was still in full effect on the final day of the Expo –

Pro Cosplayers

Cosplay has influenced the advertising industry, in which cosplayers are often hired for event work previously assigned to agency models. Thus, new variant of cosplay has developed in which cosplayers attend events mainly for the purpose of modeling their characters for still photography. Some cosplayers have since transformed their hobby into profitable, professional careers thus introducing the Pro Cosplayer.
Lots of talent this year.

Leanna Vamp & friends

Holly Wolf (right)

MCubed Cosplay (right)

& checking out a few other attractions I came across some other great talents –

GI Joe Artist Robert Atkins

After getting something to eat (don’t come hungry to this Expo unless you wanna spend $9 for popcorn & there are no alternatives within walking distance) I was ready to take in the final two panels of the day (& Expo).

George Takei

While I can’t claim I’ve ever been a huge follower of Star Trek, I’ve always found cast member George Takei fascinating. I don’t know if that stems from my obsession with unique voices but he is definitely one of a kind & one of the most positive & charming speakers I’ve ever witnessed.

Like Anthony Daniels the day before, he didn’t require any assistance and spoke to the audience directly while fielding questions (standing) he was engaging, personal and didn’t stray from tough topics. As one of the most famous gay men in the world, as well as a minority in North America, he’s had to deal with his fair share (sadly) of racism & homophobia which he addressed with the same positive candor of any other question.
Thoroughly enjoyed Mr Takei’s entire panel.

Jay & Silent Bob Get Old

Last but not least (but definitely late….over an hour to be exact) was Filmmaker Kevin Smith & co-hort Jason Mewes doing a special (ticketed) event recording a live podcast episode of Jay & Silent Bob Get Old.

In their defense the reason for such tardiness was their own popularity as they had participated in a signing/photo opp appearance just prior to the show that was running late because of such demand (& you really can’t hold that against them).

Was unsure how this was going to play out after a dreadful (non-recorded) version of this show I witnessed in Hollywood back in October.
I had seen it in it’s infancy (also in LA) way back in 2010 & didn’t think much of it then & then the Hollywood appearance was a total head-scratcher.
I’m pleased to report that while it was still was far from perfect by comparison it was actually quite fun & even without comparisons, the large crowd & late hour + the recording gave it an immediacy that was a total hoot.

After getting off to a slow start (Smith rambled for almost an hour before letting Mewes even speak) to which after he said (in all seriousness) “So now let’s get the show started” people nervously laughed as if to say “Ok NOW the show is starting?”.
But the magic did come with lots of laughs & great spontaneity (that Smith is known for).
Namely being during a hopelessly stupid segment that Mewes conducts called Let Us Fuck, where they bring up volunteers in the audience to act out an improved air-sex scene. This was injected with even more surreality as it’s participants were all in Cosplay, most memorably this lanky dude that turned out to be a Martial Arts instructor that Smith goaded into kicking a Red Bull can from his hand (that he pulled off in perfect spinning heel kick fashion to huge applause).

Part II of the skit included this total babe Kalah as Thor doing an hilarious Air-Sex joke with Mewes. Kalah was one of the most fun people I spoke with & shot immediately after serving as the fitting last & totally awesome cosplayer of the Expo.

Kalah Ruth

Thanks to Dallas Comic Con for having us & congratulations on another great year. To all the guests & vendors & the amazing cosplayers we met thank you for making this year extra special. See ya next time! (& check out this mini-expo below!).

DFW GI Joe & Action Figure Show – June 11th – Grapevine Convention Center – Grapevine, TX

As a life-long follower of everything Joe, I look forward to this annual event as it’s close, intimate & really the only one of it’s kind locally.
Produced by Keith & Hank they put on a great show every year full of awesome vendors, artists & good fun.

First thing I see when we walk in this awesome LARP group called the Fightin 788th who had an impressive setup complete even with personalized file cards & movie grade replica gear. Seriously awesome.

Right next to them was a fascinating character, Doug – a collector of the original Joe figures & brilliant diorama creator.
Had so much fun learning and speaking with Doug and enjoying the fruits of his labor these amazing displays all made by him with care.

Vendors –

On the left there is my old buddy Rich Simmons, fellow Joe fanatic (& frequent guest on our TrickyKid Radio Podcast).
Check out his booth at your local toy show, he’s got great prices & one of the raddest dudes I know.
On the right (& with all due respect to Rich) I almost gave this dude all my money. I no longer collect toys but naturally their are still a few things from childhood I’d still like to own (& he seemingly had like two of all of it, the original shit, MY SHIT from 1982) & all for reasonable prices.

Artists

Had a great talk with Eddie Medina, a local (& supremely talented) artist. Also a super nice guy that does some really great stuff.
Check out his site here & also I’m sure you can catch him around town as well at like-minded events.

Much thanks to Keith & Hank for having us again this year and I look forward to watching this unique show grow larger each year.
See ya next time!

AKON 27: The World’s Largest Anime & Manga Convention

Billed as the largest convention of it’s kind Project A-Kon, this the annual Anime & Convention Expo, this year being their 27th installment is something that in spite of having little to zero interest or knowledge of anime & it’s culture, is an event I’ve attended twice before.
First time was 5 years when I was hired to DJ a late night rave beginning at midnight – That year I had just flown in and went straight to the gig and not much time to look around or any idea what I was getting myself into. I swore I’d be back and last year I made good on that promise.

So now, back for the attack as it were I was hoping the navigation process might be a bit easier after last year’s confounding experience.

Project A-Kon 27 – June 3rd-5th – Hilton Anatole – Dallas, TX

The first thing you see when you enter the hotel (after you have battled insane parking issues) is that it has been COMPLETELY taken over by the convention. There is no formation or people directing any sort of order, it’s just complete MADNESS that gives the event it’s pulse that it’s patrons seem to thrive on.
Nothing informs you of that greater/quicker than the sea of awesome Cosplayers EVERYWHERE.

Katrina George

Like last year, we profile who IMO had the best costume & overall personality, attitude etc. Basically just who kicked the most ass & I defy anyone to declare that anyone was more awesome this year than Katrina George.
Her Cosplay freaking slAAAyed each day of the convention, she is so super talented and with all due respect to the amazing people I met & networked with, Katrina was probably my fave to have met as she was as charming with the best attitude as she is talented.

A-Kon is not exclusively about anime; it offers something for everyone from gamers to steampunk enthusiasts, ravers, kinksters and everything in between.
A-Kon seems to be engineered to have socializing as it’s focus and with so many activities going on (at ALL hours) the place was literally hemmoraging with energy.
For me, a music fanatic, I loved that the convention also offers live performances of acts that you would not normally get a chance to see.
Be it, in this country and certainly not in this intimate context.
The two acts performing on the Friday night, were two bands that I previously had never heard of, listened to one note or knew of their existence moments prior.
For me, this is extremely thrilling as I LOVE not knowing what was coming & potentially was about to be exposed to something that I previously would never have had the chance to.While all of my hipster friends were down the street watching Refused & my other friends that share my bad tastes were across that street catching Whitesnake, I had a dilemena at first if I should leave to go catch one of them but that was now solved with this new potential (& not having to park the car again).
Was crossing fingers they’d be Metal.

Season of Ghosts

I made my way into the giant ballroom for the first of two acts – Season of Ghosts who made quite the grand entrance themselves.
Led by Frontwomen Sophia Aslanides, the Venezuelan born/Greek raised/later Japanese ex-pat foxy looking singer.

I give it up for her confidence, and she had to be feeling strong in front of such an adoring audience that was pouring over her every move but at times it really did feel like low hanging fruit. Very dramatic as needed in their presentation and sound, if not wholly original they put the look & drama over huge.

Yousei Teikoku

Again, having zero knowledge, not even an image to go on, incredibly I almost thought to skip Yousei Teikoku’s performance as it was conflicting with a few panels I was thinking of catching. What a colossal fucking mistake THAT would have been!
To illustrate my lack of knowledge, I thought it was gonna be some aging crooner or something haha.
That is until I was flipping through the program and saw perhaps the greatest promotional photo ever taken – check THIS out.

Bam! One photo and I was already a fan (see the power of image?) I got to say the words Japanese Gothic Heavy Metal Band (& just think I was actually contemplating Whitesnake over this) Female fronted and Metal – I couldn’t wait, I literally ran down the steps to get back to the ballroom, just in time for their equally awesome entrance. Apparently the band works for the goddamned Yokuza or something as I couldn’t take any photos (more on this in a bit) so you’ll have to settle for this live pic from a recent gig that I shamelessly (had to) steal from an ESP endorsement campaign to give you an idea of what I was looking at.

Also led by a powerful Frontwomen who even calls herself Empress Yui & with a stance like that I’d hoped she back it up which she along with the band did ten-fold.
Although probably clueless to the most of the audience, I thought it was very cool as a Metal band, knowing their history (& geography) they gave a nod to hometown Metal hero Dimebag Darrell by ending their set with a few bars from Pantera’s Mouth for War.
A very unique and real pleasure to see this act live.

Fuck The Staff

Now, the same cannot be said for the staff that handled this portion of the convention as you can’t imagine the baffling abuse of so-called authority by teenage volunteers led by this wannabe biker chick who was thoroughly enjoying her newfound albeit brief status.
Let me explain: I walked in to see the first band Season of Ghosts and took a seat sidestage where they had two rows of chairs reserved for press and the handicapped. Directly in front of the stage separating the crowd from the performers was a roped off area of about 20 yards deep and about another 40 yards wide teeming with activity of photographers, videographers and gaffers, all very distracting.
Though I had a press badge and walked in with my camera already around my neck, I was told I couldn’t take pics by biker woman.
Ok, fine but like everyone around me was doing that obnoxious cell phone thing the whole show, so I thought I could just pop off a few with my phone, surely she meant no professional photography.
This pimple faced teenage volunteer tried to tell me I couldn’t even do that (in Biker Women’s absence) until I showed her my press badge and she fucked off.
That’s the pic above of Season of Ghosts.

Ok, so when I returned for Yousei Teikoku, I took my same seat and Biker Women gave the same no-photography spiel but this time seemed a bit put off by me.
Again the band starts, roving activity upfront and what seemed like every patron there was taking photos with their phones, including the volunteers that would occassasionally rudely stand at the barricade right in front of me like I wasn’t even there to do so. Like they don’t want me to photograph this, now they don’t even care if can see this damn show, starting to think this press badge isn’t worth the plastic it’s printed on.
This was all but confirmed as again I snapped a couple off with my phone and returned to enjoying the show.
Only for this girl that was sitting a few seats over to my left for both performances who looked like she probably worked at Hot Topic (or will eventually) and this guy I couldn’t figure out if they were sitting there due to a potential handicap (his), to walk over to Biker Women whisper something to her and then sit back down.
Seconds later, Biker Women turns to me and is all over me insisting I hand her my phone so she can delete the pics I took with MY FUCKING PHONE.
Not only that but she was doing so with this condescending disgust that she was clearly enjoying, bristling with authority and loving that I had given her an excuse to try to shame me. Then it occured to me, Hot Topic girl had told her that I had taken them! This emo/acne hybrid had actually tattled on me to illustrate the immaturity I was dealing with. She even walked in front of me to do so to further illuminate how much she wasn’t sweating me, Who am I? Charlie Fucking Brown?!?!

I legitimately didn’t know how to do what she was asking in terms of deletion from my hard drive and was fumbling all the while she doing that thing where she acting like I’m lying to her – like busted but still feigning innocence. While this was happening everyone around us was taking pictures I pointed out all to which she gleefully had an excuse as to why they could & I couldn’t. In fact at one point I might have been the only person not taking photos.
Humiliating, deflating and just sour fucking grapes to the point I just left the show and contemplated leaving the convention.
If the producers of A-Kon are reading this, I will NEVER return if I’m ever treated remotely with such disrespect again.

Panels –

Among the overwhelming amount of things to choose from their are panels all through the convention (at all hours, more on this later).
The first of three I attended the first day were:

Story Telling

Kink & Consent

(The above pic definitely inspires a caption contest right?)

Both played to large, standing-room-only audiences to varying degrees of cohesion.
The first one was largely out of my wheelhouse and though the punchlines were occasionally funny, the reality that I was squashed in between two dudes eating Cheetos in an airless, windowless room close to midnight listening to a dude in a Fedora spout puns became too palpable until I moved on to the other one next door – KinK and consent

This one was actually quite informative, researched and presented well, namely by a kink couple that sourced their own lifestyle experiences as influencing references to an increasingly restless crowd. It felt very 1970’s & in my male Darwinian bullshit mindset the whole thing was gonna end in a key party with free rooms for all attendees until the power point presentation snapped me back to reality. In all seriousness, it sent a loud and much needed reminder that consent is everything.

Lastly after hitting the rave for a few hours and mingling to stay awake I sauntered in for the final panel of the evening (or perhaps the first of the morning)
A special (but holy-shit-who-booked-this-at-this-ungodly-hour) presentation from the girls of Cosplay Deviants.

Cosplay Deviants

From L-R
Cerise Zeller
Civil Heathen
Two newest applicants &
Hex Hypoxia

I caught the girls earlier in the day (pic above) who are all awesome, very sharp, driven & business-minded individuals and co-miserated about the impending late-night hour to which they confirmed that indeed it was NEVER their idea to go on so late.
Obviously it being 18+ subject matter & competing with the rave, they got the sad luck of the draw apparently.
However, impressed with their aptitude and being a fan of the site, my attitude was, if these wonderful humans can stay up to do this for us, the least I can do is go support it.

This is with all due respect to the girls who really did their best to soldier on, but given that their presentation was a bust due to a corrupt file, they attempted to rally with a spirited Q&A. However the sparse attendance of around 15 people where half were drunk and talking amongst themselves & another fourth that were transparently creepy left only a few with a genuine agenda. Those had to navigate the aforementioned pratfalls & aim their queries at a panel desperately in need of a moderator. But then Amanda Kee showed up and suddenly all was right with the world.
However, these girls could have told me I was gonna die in 10 mins & thanks to their infectious presentation I still would have left the room happy.

Saturday –

I returned on Saturday to witness even more amazing Cosplay, many preparing for the Cosplay Contest to be held later that evening.

Kelsey Topper & friends –

Kelsey (center/purple) is one of the most talented cosplayers today & one of the nicest you’ll ever meet.
She made our Top 10 Cosplayers list last year & this year she has raised her game exponentially & just KILLING IT at every con & being featured in major publications. As you can see here when she arrived at A-Kon, she came to slay.

Kink Panel

Ok, so I only attended a single panel on Sat was on Kink Culture but it was not only the weirdest panel of the Expo but perhaps one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Let me try to unpack this as best as I can:
Literally having NO IDEA what to expect I entered the room to see it divided (randomly) down the middle.
Our panel “leader”, a bespectacled mega-nerd in his mid-twenties who (admittedly) given the late hour (around midnight) was well on his way to being drunk, had no use for a microphone as he shouted every syllable while eating pasta out of someone’s SHIRT POCKET (I’ll let that sink in for a sec).
Ok so in my observation a large percentage of the 18+ crowd of A-KON also identify as strongly as members of the Kink community given the increasing SRO panels on different sub-topics (this was all but confirmed when this panel was crashed by a mid-40s swinger couple whose female half revealed herself as a size queen & got the room really sharing – see pic below)
The idea of this one was seemingly about creating a fun way to get strangers to be social and discuss their kinks in an open format.
And the “format” was this: Everyone was to write down their #1 kink on a post-it and stick it to their foreheads revealing it to all, then randomly the leader would point to those with their hands raised (most in crazy cosplay) to say something supportive about said kink (to which randomly selected attendees would volunteer to have the platitudes written somewhere on there bodies). Said “writer” was the leader’s assistance, an even drunker more shouty man in a leotard & tutu combo combined with a 90’s alterna-rocker haircut. (Imagine a cross-dressing member of early 90’s Pearl Jam).
Got it? Weird right?
Then the leader would end that individual discussion with picking someone that wasn’t into said kink to offer a rebuttal & then collectively it was up to everyone to shout what it said about “us” as a society.

Here’s the Good, the Bad & the Ugly of that scenario:

The Good – the leader despite his shortcomings proved to be somewhat irresistable in his delivery & keeping everyone engaged.
(At times) it was actually very fun & the sexual undertones were so palpable that it inspired that literally just about anything could happen                         so you had to stick around to see what was coming next.

The Bad – The room was about 3 times too small given the supply and demand exchange and it became downright styfling hot in there.
The responses soon became competitions for the best puns or the sexually frustrated to air their greivances.

The Ugly – It was painfully immature – It was a peek into what young nerds consider to be “partying” and the jokes were such a garden variety of “low                     hanging fruit” that would get ripples of laughter. The “final” kink was (consensual) “rape” that cleared half the room (me included).

On to the Rave!!

On top of everything this crazy festival had to offer, on both Friday and Saturday nights they offer a late-night rave that doesn’t even begin till midnight and goes till 4am. This was actually my introduction to A-Kon as I was hired to DJ this rave about 5 years ago and just showed up right before I went on not knowing anything else about the convention.
Held in the massive ballroom, it does have a very young & geeky feel as their is no alcohol served but that for me is the total appeal as it doesn’t look like a bunch of zombies wacked out on drugs or a competitive fashion show. As a performer this is ideal to just see alot of people having a genuine good time.

…..aaaaaaannd as if that wasn’t enough, they were showing the Rocky Horror Picture show in the atrium with an awesome shadow cast performance from Dallas art collective Los Bastardos.

All in all what a crazy, surreal, insert under used adjective here to describe what an amazing experience Project A-Kon was & is every year.
If you haven’t been, make plans to check this wild ride off your list next year!

Revenge of the Nerds w/ 2016 Texas Pinball Festival, setting a World Record for Nerf battles, the Cosplay of All-Con & much more.

What a crazy month!

Jared’s Epic Nerf Battle: Setting a Guinness World Record – March ?? – ATT Stadium – Arlington, TX

Hard to go wrong with participating in a Guinness World Record attempt, that being of joining thousands for the ultimate Nerf Gun Battle all while raising money for charity.

The event was organised by Jared Guynes as a fundraiser for two local charities: Rebuild Rowlett Foundation for Long Term Relief and Garland Tornado Relief Fund. You may recall Guynes made local headlines a few years ago when he turned his nostalgia obsession for early 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a record-breaking crowd-funded party for the ages that featured Vanilla Ice & many others from the first two Ninja Turtles movies & other novelties from that era.
Guynes actually tried to make this attempt for the Nerf record at that party but too many logistics kept it from being secured.
As a patron of that event & this one I can tell you that Guynes is loooooong on ambition & creativity & literally fearless when it comes to making impossible dreams come true but also at times reality comes crashing down with very real circumstances that often go over-looked.
But as mentioned at the beginning, how can it really wrong when your heart & inspiration are in the right place?

Not to say that their weren’t a few frustrations – This is in no way a gesture of disrespect but this was an amateur event put on by simply that, amateurs, so your bound to run into a few problems & I couldn’t document the entire experience without mentioning those as well.
To start, the tickets were sold via the crowdfunding site Tilt (that Guynes also used for the previously mentioned party in 2013). They were initially $16 but I took my time purchasing them to the point that when news of the event picked up steam they had to do several more rounds of ticket sales for higher prices so by my point of purchase they had more than doubled in price.

Once thing that virtually gave the event that legitimate big-fight feel was that thanks to it’s charity connections, Guynes was able to secure ATT Stadium, which just happens to also be the home of the Dallas Cowboys & currently the largest sporting facility in North America & one of the biggest in the world.

Cosplayer Jessica Rabbit & I

For many just to see the stadium & actually get to take the field of an NFL team, let along local heroes, was worth the price of admission, let alone getting to run down said field living a childhood dream of engaging in the largest Nerf gun battle EVER.
Someone that shared that same dream as I, Dallas Pro Cosplayer & frequent co-host on our TrickyKid Radio Podcast, Miss Jessica Rabbit who I invited to join me for this special day where she more than rose to the occasion by donning her best Laura Croft and getting set for the Epic Battle ahead.

Once again, this was an amateur event, this was not put on by the Dallas Cowboys or the stadium, how Guynes was able to do this was basically he sold 3k self-guided tour tickets as entry to the event. Only one gate was made available (& not the one printed on the ticket) so it took it awhile just to get everyone into the stadium & into the seats. Once there we made friends with the other eager participants, many of which whom were also in cosplay.

Once in the stands, began what many started to refer to as Jared’s Epic Wait.  More than a bit rude given what was attempting to be accomplished, however not entirely inaccurate. Amateur event or not, it was asking alot of almost 3k people to sit in the stands with fully loaded Nerf guns, repeatedly reminding them (at times even harshly) NOT to fire their guns for over two hours. The stadium only alotted 3hrs for the event, so people, many with small children who had driven from several states away was watching the time tick away and getting antsy.

What they didn’t realize that this wasn’t gonna be a free-for-all where they just start shooting once inside for three straight hours. It was more reminescent of some of the indignities you must suffer to attend a taping of a TV show. Your excited about what’s about to go down, but once you arrive you realize you are not in control of the fun & totally at the mercy of someone else’s behest.
Once on the field however, the excitement became palpable and when finally all the organization requirements had been met (many I feel could have been taken care of long before the participants entered the stadium) the horn at last sounded and IT WAS ON!

It was literally RAINING nerf bullets – Funny story, we realized when we arrived that we had little to no ammunition so we went across the street to the Wal-Mart to secure some, only to discover those little things aren’t cheap. I had the idea that once the battle started we would be drowning in ammunition so best to save the money. Cheap I know but instantly I was up to my ankles in nerf bullets so I just used those to fill our guns.
The actual battle was only 5 mins – until they had a few other mini-battles based on age groups & gun specifications.

After the battle, all the toy pistols were donated to kids in need at the Buckner Children’s Home.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Christina Flounders was on the battlefield sidelines to make sure that all the rules were followed.

The attempt was almost triple the size of the previous record NERF fight (577 people) which was organised last year by Dogtown After Hours, an annual student-led event in Des Moines, Iowa.
All in all a good time was had by all and lots of money was raised for charity while we currently hold a World Record!

P.S. I do want to mention something: As a kid you grow up thinking (at least I did) that the Guinness Record Book is like a branch of the CIA. Like it’s some government issued special task force that only hand out these certificates like the Military hands out Bronze Stars.
In reality, it’s a total racket – See, they charge like 8k just to have a “judge” there and then they charge each participant $30 for their “certificate”.
Your not issued or given one they sell them to you – That’s all Guinness is – they sell certificates. That’s why their is no limit to what a World Record can be and why you see so many silly ones like “Eater of the Most Donuts” etc because they are not in the business of turning down money. In fact they prey upon most people’s inner narcissisism and profit from it.
As nice as a guy as Jared is and doing good things for the community, trust me he is the prime demographic for such a thing.

Texas Pinball Festival – March 18-20th – Embassy Suites Convention Center – Frisco, TX

For the third year in a row, at what has become one of my favorite weekend of the year, the Texas Pinball Festival.Every type of people showed up for the three-day fest to play more than 350 tables.

The games spanned the entire history of pinball, starting with the first tilted mini-tables that became the flipper games of the ’50s.

Many of us grew up imagining the future would look like something out of The Jetsons. What we didn’t predict was that once all of the gadgets arrived, embracing their opposite – the clunky, inefficient ways of the past — would start to become a more exciting prospect.
Older players got to experience new tables with old themes like Creature from the Black Lagoon which has LED lights and three levels of play & Rob Zombie’s horror themed table.

One of my faves of the new machines & easily one of the most popular was the new Ghostbusters machine that had an additional audio interface with headphones for maximum Ghostbusting sounds.

As you can see above above the crowd was really into it and people from all walks of life were enjoying all the games new & old along with the vendors

Imoto Arcade

As you can see in the background of the above picture, locals also displayed and made available for play their classic arcade games (that I must admit I enjoy almost as much at the pinball). I met this super nice guy named Joe who was there with his two young kids about 6 & 8 I guesstimate while he was playing an old stand up cabinet of Track & Field that was THE game during my skating rink era when I wasn’t much older than his kids. Joe remarked that seeing the machine was like running into an old girlfriend haha – I repeated his line for the remainder of the weekend.
I ran into my old friend (& major pin enthusiast) Ziggy who I spent much time on this machine as well as Donkey Kong Jr.
He made this amazing gesture and bought us both silverballs to commemorate the weekend and now when he guests on TrickyKid Radio Podcast, instead of clinging drinks to say cheers, we just rub our balls together haha.

In the end per past years theirs a big tournament that awards trophies to the best players.

I’ll leave you with what has to be one of the coolest pins I’ve ever seen – The Big Lebowski

The Cosplay of All-Con Sci-Fi & Fantasy Convention – March 17th-20th – Wingate Hotel – Dallas, TX

Good times at the All-Con Festival in Dallas & to the staff you have cosplayer Jessica Rabbit to thank/curse for me coming.
She was already set on going with her friends and I had the Pinball fest (see above) happening simultaneously so I just shot in and out between pinball & here and managed to get some good shots and have fun just the same.

Thurs –

The first night happening on a sleepy Thurs was free to all – Here’s Jessica Rabbit & co sporting two separate looks.

Friday night –

Friday I had arrive a bit late after pinball just to hang with Jess who looked absolutely stunning as Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn.

It was so late but people were still milling about so we thought it would be fun to walk around and take pics with other cosplayers.

Saturday

Now Saturday afternoon before heading back to the Pinball fest was really the only day I was able to mill around and meet some of the other super talented cosplayers.

Kelsey Topper (right as Poison Ivy) one of our 2015 Top Cosplayers of the year who has RAISED HER GAME substantially in just a short amount of  time.
Be on the lookout for Kelsey during the upcoming Con season, she is so creative and as kind as she is talented.

Callie Calyspo (center in white)
She participated in a very insightful panel on legal prostitution called Modern Day Cathouse –  Calyspo is currently an active courtesan herself under the name Kitti Minx working in several Nevada brothels.

& Erica Muse (far right in fur)

Stay tuned as Con season is upon us and we will have much more coming your way!

Dallas Comic Con Fan Days Expo w/ The Dukes of Hazzard & more (Feb 13-14th 2016)

We had quite the nerdy year in 2015. I’ve always been into comics, games & other geeky stuff but professionally after attending the Salt Lake City Comic-Con everything changed. Next thing I know, I’m being invited to cover the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim and indoctrined into the fascinating world of Cosplay that has been around for awhile but really exploded in 2015. Suddenly, my timeline feeds are filled with all these new creative people and a calendar full of wonderful events to meet them all. So we start the year off right with this one:

Dallas ComicCon Fan Days – February 13th-14th – Irving Convention Center – Irving, TX

Held at the brand new & super impressive Irving Convention Center right outside of Dallas, Dallas Comic Con Fan Days is an event they put on twice a year that bookends their largest event of the year that’s held at the much larger Dallas Convention Center. However, this “mini-con” felt anything but that.
I think it’s popularity surprised the producers & even overwhelmed that city as the parking garage was full before the doors opened and most patrons (including us) had to park close to a mile away. So fun seeing all the fans in costumes making the trek – It felt like a total nerd pilgrimage was in full-swing ?
The first thing we see when arrive – This impressive Juraasic Park display.

Though I was hear in a professional capacity, this is also my interest & passion & as a kid there were few things I was more passionate about than the Dukes of Hazzard. It was essentially my life – It aired on Friday nights, so when I came home from school, my weekends began with Bo, Luke & Daisy.
So you can imagine my excitement that all three were gonna be here for a special Q&A panel and signing appearances.

The Dukes of Hazzard

Cast members (from L-R) Tom Wopat, Catherine Bach & John Schneider participated in a wonderful Q&A session where they gleefully talked of chemistry, fellowship and fun. You can see the entire chat in the video below:

Did you think I was gonna resist having my picture taken next to the General Lee? Of course not, I’m surprised I didn’t jump the rail & get in it.
If your wondering, no I do not support the imagery of the Confederate Flag or any symbolism for that matter that’s designed to divide us.
I love the fact that in the above Q&A the cast not only doesn’t shy away from that topic but actually embraced the chance to clarify their feelings.
And I will echo our shared sentiments here – What it meant to the Dukes (kayfabe) was simple pride along with an 8 year old child with no concept of racism or hate a recognizable image of the car of his dreams. Hell you could have painted Ronald McDonald up there and I wouldn’t have noticed.
As an adult, do I wish it was a U.S. Flag or just anything else that could bring the show and it’s joy back to syndication? Absolutely.

After the Q&A the three cast members sat up shop just outside for simultaneous (but individual) signing appearances. I got re-aquainted with John Schneider’s publicity team and had a nice talk. As I was doing so I hear this loud shriek behind me to turn around to see WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes in his Stardust persona in full character on a mission being followed by a film crew.

Now Rhodes wasn’t (publicly) scheduled or announced to be here, this was a fun surprise the producers had set up but I began to wonder what his agenda was and then it hit me. As we made our way up here to see the Dukes earlier, we got caught in this train of people we were trying to cross that stretched for what seemed like the entire expanse of the Convention Center. Finally we slid through but not before asking one of them “What was this line for?” to which they excitedly replied Stephen Amell of Arrow fame. I’d never heard the name or seen the show, but when someone said “He’s Arrow” , as a die-hard wrestling fan I remembered that he was part of a comic book-y crossover story line at Summer Slam last year…..and then I remembered it was against (Cody as) Stardust!
Oh shit! He’s here to crash Amell’s panel unannounced – Follow Cody! I shouted.

The doors to the Amell’s panel open (from behind) and the whole crowd is shocked & turns around to see Stardust make the perfect surprise entrance.
A great, great moment. Joined by his wife Brandi (WWE Ring Announcer Eden Stiles) to officially crash the party.

The ENTIRE Stardust-Stephen Confrontation at Dallas Comic Con …

See what happened when Stardust – WWE Universe confronted Stephen Amell at Dallas Comic Con!

Posted by WWE on Saturday, February 13, 2016

Now speaking of surprises, I was completely unaware of Stephen Amell’s popularity, no offense I just had no idea. When I walked into signing area behind where the Dukes where to take photos of the participants ALL LINES were empty except for Amell’s.
Now did this contribute to this next adventure? You decide – Tweet us at @TrickyKid2 if you have something to add to the following:

So overzealous volunteers be damned those that are scheduled to make signing appearances most certainly want the press to take their picture. That’s what they are there for, to get paid, meet their fans, sell merchandise. I of course wanted pics for my coverage and to be clear: NEVER at the cost of a fan’s experience.
So when approaching Star Trek: The Next Generation star Brent Spiner, I first spoke with his on-site publicity team to get permission to take a few quick snaps.

Brent Spiner

His line was completely empty sans for a special needs girl & her mom who Spiner was giving extra special attention to. I was really into how nice he was being to this girl & then when they were done, I smiled, approached, smiled again & snapped off a few pics to which he gave me the stink eye in all of them.
After just a few seconds, I gave him the thumbs up (as if to say thanks, I’m done) smiled again and as I was turning away Spiner just leered at me & I could hear the cadence of his normal speaking voice he sounded like one of those mean gay kids that hand you flyers to their party in the East Village.
Help me out here, is Spiner a dick? My friends & I have referenced that sad girl from Trekkies when her sexual frustrations would reach it’s apex she would take what she referred to as a “Brent Break”.

Ok so now what would the convention be without its fans?
Here are the Cosplayers of Fan Days 2016 –

Ellen Hudgens & Amanda Gish (left)
&  Zumi (right)

Chris (as Ghost Rider)
& Karsen Meredith Morris

Denice Reed (left)
& Megan Proska (right)

Denice made the most incredible dress I’ve ever seen & should be commended with some kind of special award.
Her dress is made up ENTIRELY of pull tab can & bottle caps that took her over a year to collect & to make. Not to mention look how freaking cute she looks in it.
Good job Denice!

The Cosplay Contest Red Carpet

Who can resist a red carpet with perfect branded back-drop just sitting there unoccupied when it’s designed for taking pictures?
Later on the first day is the Cosplay Contest and this area becomes a shitshow that I usually avoid but before the storm hit I was able to capture some great cosplay & snap a few of my own ?

Katie Gilroy, Hillary Harber & Megan Pihl (left)
& Jessica Rabbit & I (right)

Jessica Rabbit (above right with me) you might recall made our Top 10 Cosplayers list last year & speaking of which, another entry on that list, Kelsey Topper KILLED both days of the con & really raised her game & in my opinion had some of the most outstanding cosplay of the entire weekend.

Pro-Cosplayers

I typically don’t shoot Pro-Cosplayers (especially if I have shot them before, as I have these two last May) as they have alot of fans lined up & again my motto is: Never At the Expense of the Fan Experience + their getting a fair share of attention and I like to shoot the up & coming.
However these two outdid themselves and were both very generous with their time& super fun to shoot.

Silly Little Missy (left)
& Jennifer Van Damsel (right)

Oddly as I was approaching the Convention Center I kept hearing all this shouting from across the street & then I saw young patrons shouting back.
Not paying much attention, until I was forced to, I initially thought it was just some kids playing a game until I saw their were actual protesters, spending their day shouting at people from across the street. What were they protesting, fun?

So that wraps it up for Fan Days Expo, don’t miss the big one at Dallas Convention Center happening June 3-5th 2016!

MAD Magazine North Texas Comic Book Show

MAD About Dallas II – North Texas Comic Book Show – November 14th – Doubletree Hotel Market Place – Dallas, TX

In this continuing year of all things geeky we attended our second event of the year put on by the good people of North Texas Comic Books shows.
We attended a really fun event over the Summer & was looking forward to returning.

The theme of this show was MAD Magazine as they had several writers & artists from the legendary publication. I myself had a subscription to MAD for most of the mid -to late ’80s so it was a great thrill to meet Kit Lively who was as generous with his time as he was welcoming & funny.

Personally, our main agenda was to meet & interview legendary animator Paul Coker Jr. who’s design for Rankin/Bass holiday specials & charachters you are certainly familiar with. He was joined by Rankin/Bass Historian Rick Goldschmidt whom I had been corresponding with in the previous weeks about setting up an interview on the day of the show.

Paul Coker Jr.

Rick Goldschmidt –

The setup & time frame didn’t really lend itself to an actual interview, so we’ll be bringing a phone interview on TrickyKid Radio Podcast next week as part of our special Holiday episode.

Just like at the event over the summer – they had a great cosplay contest – below are the finalists.

You can’t win with Texas weather (as the cosplay contest portion of this convention is held outdoors) as during the summer it was so brutally hot I wasn’t able to last more than 30 mins without feeling dizzy & this time it was downright cold haha.

Some more great cosplay seen at the convention:

Thanks again to North Texas Comics for having us again & we look forward to the next show scheduled for Jan 30-31st 2016!
